The Community Services Department of Palo Alto, specifically the Open Space, Parks, and Golf Division, is looking for entry-level candidates to join our Open Space team for the position of Open Space Technician. We welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds who are starting their careers in Open Space and Parks Management. Operating under general supervision, the role involves tasks in Parks and Open Space areas that contribute to the protection, preservation, and upkeep of Palo Alto's open space lands. This is an SEIU Hourly (limited-benefits) position that is budgeted to not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The number of hours per week and schedule will be determined based on assignment. Schedule: Work weekends, holidays and evenings (as early as 7 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m.) . Essential Duties: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Assist with building and maintaining trails on City lands. Operate mechanical equipment such as chain saws, weed whips, power pruners, mowers, etc. Perform cleanup and routine maintenance on City lands, buildings, and restrooms. Drive trucks and tractors as required and perform minor vehicle safety maintenance. Perform semi-skilled carpentry and construction tasks using hand and power tools. Provide information and directions at Foothills Park Entrance Station including explanation of park rules and regulations. Enter and manage reservations for park facilities such as campground and picnic areas. Minimum Qualifications: Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge and skills, which would typically be acquired through: High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent. Possess valid Class “C” California driver’s license and have satisfactory driving record (must provide current DMV record). Knowledge Skills and Abilities Possess skills needed to perform basic construction and maintenance assignments. Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally, including the use of 2-way radio. Ability to demonstrate skill in providing quality assistance tactfully and courteously to a culturally diverse visitor population, city staff and personnel from other agencies. Perform a variety of financial record keeping using basic math and computer skills. Working Conditions/ Physical Conditions: Travel to park sites; some exposure to dust, smoke, noise, and environmental hazard; some moderate lifting, standing, climbing; work in inclement weather conditions. Wear and maintain a prescribed uniform (must provide own boots).
