Nature of Work: STREETS AND STORMWATER DIVISION Streets - Performs work in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, and repair of streets. Employees in this class perform construction, pipe installation and cement work to include laying curbs, streets, sidewalks, work on a variety of structures and perform related work incidental to these tasks. Required to work under adverse environmental conditions. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher classification and is reviewed by direct observation, while in progress and upon completion. Stormwater - Performs semiskilled work in maintenance of stormwater curb inlets and baskets in the Streets/Stormwater Division. Performs lead and skilled work in the operation of storm inlets and storm baskets and may oversee unskilled employees. Required to work in adverse weather conditions. Depending on the position, may assist on a vactor truck, cleaning storm lines and storm systems, and assisting on TV inspection truck. WATER RECLAMATION DIVISION SEM - Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, inspection, and repair of wastewater collection systems (sewage force mains, gravity sewers and commercial/residential laterals). Employees in this class assist a skilled worker laying sewer lines and extensions, repairing broken sewer lines, building and repairing manholes, and/or collecting field data for rehabilitation of inflow/infiltration sources located in the sewer system; and perform related work incidental to these tasks. May be exposed to raw sewage. Work is performed under the supervision of a Streets Maintenance/Construction Supervisor and is reviewed by direct observation, while in progress and upon completion. SEM Reclaim - Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, inspection, and repair of reclaimed water distribution & metering systems (commercial/residential reclaimed water service lines and metering assemblies). Employees in this class assist a skilled worker in the repair, maintenance, and operations of the reclaimed distribution system, as well as several thousand service lines and metering systems; and perform other related work incidental to these tasks, including but not limited to assisting with inspections of facilities (commercial and residential), which utilize reclaimed water. May be exposed to raw sewage and reclaimed water product. Work is performed under the supervision of an Environmental Specialist or Utility Service Worker II. Firefighter/Paramedics work a 24-day work period based on a 48/96 work schedule which begins with the start of the A shift 48/96 schedule. The 56-hour (average) workweek schedule consists of two consecutive 24-hour work shifts (48 consecutive duty hours) followed by four consecutive calendar days off (96 consecutive hours off duty). DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW: Tulare Fire Department is comprised of two divisions: Administration and Fire Suppression. ADMINISTRATION DIVISION: Tulare City Fire Department is responsible for enforcing local, state and federal fire safety laws. The Prevention Bureau within the admin division, achieves this by conducting annual fire & life safety inspections of all existing buildings that are open to the public. The prevention bureau performs plan reviews for safety compliance of all new commercial, industrial and multi-residential structures. Plan review consists of checking plans for fire safety features such as: fire sprinkler, and fire alarm plans. The prevention bureau is also very involved with the storage and sale of safe & sane fireworks, as well as large public gatherings most notably the World Ag Expo. SUPPRESSION DIVISION: The Fire Suppression Division consists of forty-one (40) uniformed personnel. The primary responsibility of the fire suppression and first responder units are to respond to fire, emergency medical, rescue, and life safety emergencies within Tulare. Emergency Services are delivered through four (4) in-service fire companies from three (3) strategically located fire stations within the city. Three of the fire companies are staffed with three personnel (captain, engineer, and firefighter/paramedic) and one patrol unit is staffed with two personnel (captain and engineer/paramedic). A division chief is on duty each day to perform as an incident commander, supervise fire suppression activities, and provide personnel supervision. DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW: Tulare Fire Department is comprised of two divisions: Administration and Fire Suppression. ADMINISTRATION DIVISION: Tulare City Fire Department is responsible for enforcing local, state and federal fire safety laws. The Prevention Bureau within the admin division, achieves this by conducting annual fire & life safety inspections of all existing buildings that are open to the public. The prevention bureau performs plan reviews for safety compliance of all new commercial, industrial and multi-residential structures. Plan review consists of checking plans for fire safety features such as: fire sprinkler, and fire alarm plans. The prevention bureau is also very involved with the storage and sale of safe & sane fireworks, as well as large public gatherings most notably the World Ag Expo. SUPPRESSION DIVISION: The Fire Suppression Division consists of forty-one (40) uniformed personnel. The primary responsibility of the fire suppression and first responder units are to respond to fire, emergency medical, rescue, and life safety emergencies within Tulare. Emergency Services are delivered through four (4) in-service fire companies from three (3) strategically located fire stations within the city. Three of the fire companies are staffed with three personnel (captain, engineer, and firefighter/paramedic) and one patrol unit is staffed with two personnel (captain and engineer/paramedic). A division chief is on duty each day to perform as an incident commander, supervise fire suppression activities, and provide personnel supervision. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the working-level class in the fire service series that performs all normal fire suppression, basic medical emergency, hazardous materials, and other emergency response activities.
