Position Description Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves developing safety policies and procedures; participating in the safety training and education of staff; inspecting work areas and activities for hazards; and investigating accidents. May train others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Major/Essential Functions * Assists Abilene Unit Manager with providing safety, health, environmental, and emergency preparedness training and consultation to Abilene campus stakeholders. * Assists in resolving concerns related to emergency preparedness, environmental protection, fire and life safety, laboratory safety, occupational safety, radiation protection, and safety education and training programs. * Basic knowledge and understanding of radiation, x-ray, and laser safety. * Assists in conducting safety program inspections, audits, and surveys; assists in preparation of corrective action and preventive measure reports. * Adopts and demonstrates our TTUHSC Values-Based Culture through daily actions to support: One Team, Kindhearted, Integrity, Visionary, and Beyond Service. Occasional Duties * Assists Unit Manager with investigation of reported incidents or hazards. * Increases Job Knowledge through periodic review of current applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and guidelines relating to biological safety, chemical safety, COOP, emergency preparedness, environmental protection, fire and life safety, laboratory safety, occupational safety, and radiation and laser safety. Required Qualifications Proficiency in written and mathematical processes as may be reflected by completion of high school and two years of college level work in Occupation Health and Safety with course work in assigned area. Four years of job related experience. Additional job-related education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to occupational safety. General knowledge of safety procedures as related to assigned tasks. Ability to assist in the execution of a program of campus safety. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely. Preferred Qualifications * Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills for a diverse customer base. * Previous experience in a safety or environmental position. * Ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, and determine solutions. * Ability to prioritize, manage, and resolve separate tasks and responsibilities independently and in a working group. * Desire to support Clinic and Research Faculty, Staff, and Students in a common goal of health sciences education and training. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and effectively present technical data to technical and non-technical personnel. Ability to receive inquiries / complaints and interpret regulatory guidance to a diverse customer base. OSHA 1910.120 (40-hr) hazardous waste site worker (HAZWOPER) certification.
