ABOUT OUR OPPORTUNITY About our Opportunity: Do you love animals and want to care for them? Join our team as a full-time Shelter Keepers at York County Animal Shelter. The purpose of this position is to supervise and effectively manage inmates, community service members and shelter volunteers. Additional responsibilities include processing and care for all incoming animals and animals currently in the shelter while assessing behavior, health, vaccinating, de-worming, and performing other related treatments as needed. This vital position is essential to our operations, and we are seeking self-motivated, dependable team players to join us. Work Schedule: Rotating Shift Schedule: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm or 7:30 am - 3:30 pm 40 hours per week; must be willing to work weekends & holidays as needed per operations. This position is open until filled with applications reviewed as we receive them and interviews are held weekly Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Provide high-quality care to animals in the shelter to maintain a healthy and humane environment for animals, employees and visitors. This includes but not limited to: Feeding, watering, walking, monitoring, and providing enrichment. Disinfecting shelter areas, animal areas, enclosures, and equipment. Following established animal care, cleaning, feeding, and veterinary protocols. Work with animals who may be ill, injured, stressed and/or reactive. Build collaborative, respective relationships with colleagues, volunteers and inmates. Maintaining composure and professionalism in stressful situations. Utilize safe, humane, low stress animal handling skills. Process animal intakes and outcomes. Assist in humane euthanasia and disposal of animals as needed. Assist in administering vaccinations as needed. Provides animal enrichment, including walking dogs and socializing cats. Processing animals coming into the shelter by way of animal control officers or over the counter by citizens is one of the primary duties for this position. This includes gathering information about the animal, taking digital pictures, vaccinating, de-worming, and locating a suitable place in the shelter to house the animal. Input all known information concerning the animal including medical information and owner information (if any) into the Chameleon Software system. Answer questions from phone calls, voicemails or emails, and wait on walk in citizens providing general information and York County Ordinance/Animal Shelter policies and procedures. Greet visitors, show animals, maintains computer records, and answer complaints. Supervise inmate labor and community service workers as required while performing other shelter keeper duties. Answer questions concerning rescue animals or rescue groups. This includes communicating with group officials by phone, email or in person, gathering application information or information about the individual rescue animals. Assist rescues with transportation/fostering by way of volunteers. Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned. ABOUT YOU About You - About You: Education & Experience: High School Diploma or GED equivalent and one (1) year of related experience. Must be at least 18 years old. Preferred Education & Experience: Associates degree in veterinary technology or animal care preferred. Knowledge of Animal Shelter Operations is preferred. Prior professional shelter or veterinary experience performing work comparable to this position is highly desirable. Knowledge of proper animal husbandry. Experience performing safe and humane animal handling techniques to reduce potential hazards to both handlers and animals. Basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite. Certifications & Licenses: Valid state driver’s license in order to drive County vehicles to events, vet clinics, etc. is preferred. Must possess a valid CPR and First Aid Certification, and Humane Euthanasia Certificate as provided by York County within six months from date of hire. Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities/Attributes: Knowledge of shelter operations and must be able to identify a sick or unhealthy animal as early as possible to prevent widespread sickness in the shelter. Ability to humanely handle animals of all sizes and under various circumstances. Ability to follow proper procedures and use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team or independently on assigned tasks. Ability to accept direction on given assignments. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physical Demands & Work Environment Physical & Dexterity Requirements: Requires work involving: standing, walking, gripping or feeling with hands, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, and kneeling, crouching, or crawling and talking or hearing over 2/3 of the time; tasting or smelling 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; and sitting and climbing or balancing less than 1/3 of the time. Requires lifting up to 25 pounds over 2/3 of the time; up to 50 pounds 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; and more than 100 pounds under 1/3 of the time. Vision Requirements: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). Potential Environment Conditions & Hazards: The job may risk exposure to indoor environment, outdoor environment, noise, moisture and/or humidity, dust, fumes, gases, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards, potential for violence/physical altercations, infectious diseases or blood borne pathogens.
