Operates tractor and attachments for applying amendments, fertilizer and aeration as may be directed by the supervisor or manager. This position supervises 8 full-time tree planting specialists and multiple seasonal employees to plan, implement, and evaluate street tree plantings. You will hire, train, coach, and supervise your team to be proactive problem solvers and to implement the best practices of equity, public service, urban forestry, project management, GIS/database management, and contract management. The Supervisor will work closely with a leadership team to develop multi-year planting plans, manage contracts, ensure that all plantings meet quality standards, manage communication, and conduct outreach. Troubleshoots and makes minor electrical repairs to light fixtures, ballasts, outlets and related equipment. Plants, maintains and removes trees and shrubs. Prepares and maintains annual and perennial ground covers. Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of parks, including gang mowers, light tractors with attachments, dump trucks, front-end loaders, concrete saws, wood routing machines, air compressors, jack hammers and roto-hammers. Fertilizes and aerates turf areas; mows, trims and edges lawns and greens. Identifies and resolves or reports hazards. Maintains maintenance records. WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds is also required. Additionally, the incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, chemicals, biohazard materials and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work in confined spaces and work in heavy traffic conditions and inclement weather conditions, such as wet, heat and cold. Operates and maintains power equipment to achieve efficiency using power mowers, sweepers, edging machines, trimmers, chain saws, sprayers, spreaders, rot tillers and blowers and other gardening power equipment. Maintenance activities include cleaning, lubricating and adjusting equipment, sharpening blades and replacing damaged or worn parts external to engine block and carburetor. General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds; approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials; and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
