Basic Function and Representative Duties BASIC FUNCTION: Perform journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a variety of large and small vehicles and maintenance equipment including gasoline and diesel vehicles. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Perform journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a variety of large and small vehicles and maintenance equipment including gasoline, diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. • Evaluate maintenance, servicing and repair needs; inspect and diagnose mechanical malfunctions. • Perform required and routine preventative maintenance and safety checks and inspections of District school buses and a variety of other fleet vehicles and equipment; initiate and complete repair order and vehicle inspection reports; prepare vehicles for smog inspections. • Inspect, diagnose and repair a variety of major components, such as engines, transmissions, brakes, emissions systems and electronic computer modules, of heavy duty vehicles, including onboard electronics, utilizing industry standard software and hardware • Communicate verbally and in writing with vehicle operators, operations staff and CHP Motor Carrier Division regarding vehicle records and documentation; the mechanical condition of buses; the repair of defects and vehicle maintenance schedules. • Comply with all federal and state rules and regulations including but not limited to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) related to construction, design and repair of school buses and also California Code of Regulations rules and regulations related to school bus maintenance and repair, and facility or terminal requirements. • Adjust and reline brakes; maintain, rebuild and replace air and hydraulic brake system components; change and balance tires. • Change oil, transmission, brake and other fluids according to prescribed procedures; assure compliance with laws, rules and regulations regarding the disposal of hazardous waste. • Overhaul, repair and adjust automatic and standard transmissions, drive shafts, differentials, universal joints, gears, valves, transfer cases and rear ends. • Diagnose, repair and rebuild engine electrical and ignition systems, such as distributors, coils, alternators, starters, and related systems. • Repair and maintain vehicle air conditioning units and related components; charge and recharge air conditioning systems. • Maintain shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition. • Utilize best practices of inventory accountability and control. • Safely operate a variety of fleet vehicles and specialized electronic diagnosis equipment and machinery including computers • Wash, sweep, clean and deliver school buses and other vehicles as assigned; refuel and prepare vehicles for operation; inspect tires and repair, remove and replace as needed. • Drive a vehicle to respond to calls for disabled vehicles. • Maintain current knowledge of technologies related to vehicles including the software systems required to diagnose and repair vehicles. • Perform welding as needed. Adjusts, disassembles, and repairs or replaces conventional, hydraulic, vacuum assisted and pneumatic drum and disk braking systems, components, valves, lines and master cylinders. Repairs and replaces suspension and steering components; repairs flats and mounts and balances tires including split-rim wheels. Troubleshoots, adjusts, repairs, and replaces components in cooling and exhaust systems, including smog controls. Performs limited welding, cutting, and machining of parts; obtains parts for stock and requests ordering of special parts; provides fuel and supplies and performs on-site maintenance and repair to stationary or disabled equipment; completes records of work performed and parts and supplies used. Minimum Qualifications Education Possession of a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent. Completion of an apprenticeship program in automotive or related equipment. Experience The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time verifiable journey level experience in automotive or equipment maintenance. Previous diesel, hydraulic and locomotive experience is desirable. Substitution None Other Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid California Class A driver's license with hazardous materials and tank vehicle endorsements and have a satisfactory driving record. Those who qualify based on current or previous public service may be enrolled in the defined benefit formula in place on December 31, 2012, which was 2% @ 55 and are considered “classic” members. Although Districts employees are exempt from Social Security, employees are required by federal law to contribute a percentage of their salary for Medicare coverage. Cost of living adjustments are implemented annually in accordance with labor agreements. HEALTH INSURANCE MEDICAL: Districts paid. Employees may choose from several HMO and Indemnity plans. As of January 1, 2024, the Districts contribute $2,202.87 per month for medical insurance. Depending on the choice of health plan, the Districts contribution covers all or a large portion of the premium for family coverage. DENTAL: Districts paid. The Districts pay the full premium for employee and dependent coverage for a prepaid dental program which provides for most routine dental care through a panel of contracting dentists with no deductibles. Employees are eligible to enroll in an indemnity plan if requested within thirty days after completion of three years of employment (sooner for some bargaining units), or during subsequent open enrollment periods. VISION: Employee paid. LIFE: The Districts pay for a term life policy. Employees can buy additional types and amounts of life insurance coverage at group rates. LEAVE TIME VACATION: Employees receive 88 hours of paid vacation after one full year of service, increasing up to 128 hours per year after five years, 168 hours per year after 15 years and up to 208 hours after 25 years. Prior to one year of full service, employees are given partial vacation time on January 1, based on the time worked in the preceding year. SICK LEAVE : Eight hours of full-pay sick leave per month. PERSONAL LEAVE: Employees may use up to 24 hours per calendar year from current sick leave for personal reasons. Some bargaining units allow up to 40 hours per calendar year from current sick leave for personal reasons. HOLIDAYS 13 paid holidays and one-half paid holiday depending on the employee's work schedule. TUITION REIMBURSEMENT Employees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement for approved accredited course work. STUDENT LOAN PAYMENT REIMBURSEMENT For some bargaining units, the Districts will provide student loan payment reimbursements for principal or interest paid by the employee on a qualified education loan incurred by the employee for the education of the employee.
