Incumbents must have an objective understanding of at-risk youth problems, youth health and development, and familiarity with relevant service programs. In addition, incumbents must exercise knowledge of effective coaching and communication. Essential Job Functions Interacts with school personnel, including administrators and teachers, and with community leaders around program implementation and program-related health concerns. Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians, school educators, and members of the community to reduce substance use and related adverse health and social outcomes by promoting a positive vision for youth and implementing locally driven efforts to change conditions and norms that impact community health and health equity. Interacts with school leaders on policy issues related to Wellness Center management and with school faculty and student support personnel concerning implementation of programming. Assists with curriculum development and presentation on relevant health issues. Conducts classroom presentations and group and workshop sessions on substance abuse disorders and other public health priority subjects that are risk factors for and/or exacerbated by substance use (e.g., violence, risky sexual behavior, mental health problems etc.). Provides individual coaching, guidance, and mentorship to youth on health-related issues. Conducts screening for substance abuse disorders and other health needs. Provides referrals to appropriate health and mental health services and assists youth with follow-up on referrals and related self-advocacy. Provides referrals to youth for other community-based resources to assist them in achieving their educational, recreational, employment, health, and social goals; and makes connections as needed, to improve student health and social outcomes. Coordinates the development and implementation of a school-based student Peer Leadership group. Provides Peer Educator training, preparing peer leaders to work with fellow students on issues related to substance abuse, tobacco, sexual health, emotional health and violence. Assists Peer Leadership groups with the development of in-school wellness activities including classroom educational seminars, school-wide wellness events, resource distribution, and school fairs conducted on campus by youth for youth. Prepares, collects, analyzes and reports data on delivered services; tracks referrals using established methods (i.e., electronic health record for community-based substance abuse disorder treatment referrals); enters data for reporting purposes (i.e., Primary Prevention Substance Use Disorder Data Services); makes recommendations for changes/modifications on the design and data analysis within the context of actual program functioning and youth experiences. Participates in meetings with youth, community organizations, educational institutions, Health Center organizations, and County departments to strategize on increasing participation; validates implemented curricula, activities, and supports quality improvement to assure positive outcomes and timely response to current youth and/or community needs, preferences, etc. Assists and advises the Promotores Program, with addressing parent concerns that may arise at a site. Conducts health education classes for youth, teachers, parents/guardians, community members, etc., by lecturing on and discussing various health education topics including, but not limited to, substance use disorders, interventions or treatments, sexual health services, mental health services, and social/emotional well-being.
