Description: Job Summary The Lead Plumber, assigned to the Plumbing Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations, works under general supervision of the Supervising Plumber and provides lead direction for journey-level crafts workers and semi-skilled assistants, laying out and coordinating the work flow for the shop, preparing materials lists, and ordering supplies in addition to performing work as a skilled plumber. Staff within the Plumbing Shop are responsible for a full range of journey-level skilled work in rough and finish plumbing, to ensure a clean, safe, attractive, and well-maintained learning environment. The Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides services to a University campus spread across five sites comprised of +170 acres, 52 buildings, and more than six million gross square feet. The Plumbing Shop is one of seven skilled trades shops within Maintenance & Operations and is comprised of a supervising plumber, lead plumber plus eight journey-level plumbers and two facility maintenance mechanics. The Shop reports up, through the supervising plumber who provides supervision, oversight, and guidance. Key Responsibilities Performs as a journey-level plumber in association with basic and advanced maintenance and repair work Installs, maintains, inspects, modifies, remodels, and repairs mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration related plumbing systems, including automated plumbing systems Maintain, troubleshoot and test plumbing systems, including backflow prevention devices Assemble, install, and repair pumps, pipes, fittings, and fixtures Cut, thread, and weld pipes Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of a variety of metals and materials Maintain swimming pools and lab utilities Advise on the selection, ordering, and storage of plumbing materials, equipment, and supplies Reads, interprets, and works from plans, drawings, and specifications Ensures work performed is completed in a manner conforming with plans, specifications, and building code and safety requirements Cleaning and maintaining materials, tools, and equipment used in the performance of duties Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures Maintains a clean and safe work environment Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos Performs abatement, where certified When assigned and qualified, monitors, tests, and chemically treats potable and/or non-potable water systems Consults and works with other trades workers Operates power tools, shop and construction equipment typical to the plumbing trade Reviews work order system to understand and plan for preventative, deferred, and reactive maintenance work efforts in a manner aligned with the priorities communicated by the appropriate administrator Ensures preventative maintenance and other work orders designated as high priority are completed on schedule Prepares for and plans work including development of material/supply needs lists and ordering supplies through the warehouse and business office so as to pursue the work according to schedule. Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments. Installs, tests, maintains, and repairs sewer, water, steam, heat, gas, and drainage lines and related equipment. Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing fixtures, including drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, and urinals. Inspects facilities to identify plumbing maintenance needs. Plans plumbing work, determines materials and supplies required, and estimates costs; orders materials and supplies. Assists in the maintenance of sewage lift stations. May respond to after-hour emergencies. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of : Plumbing codes, theory, design, principles and practices; Materials, methods, and tools involved in rough/finish plumbing work; Proper use and operation of hand tools, as well as electric power tools, including their maintenance and repair; On-the-job safety and use of personal protective equipment; Design techniques including interpretation of blueprints, technical plans, drawings, models, and other construction documents. Skills/Abilities to : Interpret work instructions and safety labels; Interpret blueprint drawings and related construction documents; Practice appropriate safety precautions and procedures; Effectively operate hand and power tools used to install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems and related equipment; Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Install or adapt equipment and technology to County facilities; Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public; Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of initiative, maturity, integrity, accountability, and good judgment; Respond to after-hour emergencies. Minimum Qualifications OPTION 1 : Experience : Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting. OPTION 2 : Certification : Possession of a certificate of completion from a plumbing apprenticeship program recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council, the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a state apprenticeship council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training. Experience : Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting. In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required: License : Possession of a valid class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
