The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP’s history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, infrastructure, landscaping, and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs, and functional requirements. The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full-time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many who have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Includes but is not limited to picking up ground trash and debris on a daily and weekly schedule, emptying trash, and recycling containers on a daily and weekly schedule. Loading and unloading material into and out of trucks and utility vehicles. Move loaded materials, such as barrels, bags, boxes, and other containers. Sorting, cleaning, and loading paper, pallets, glass, wood, plastic, metal and cardboard, other recyclables, and trash in accordance with program guidelines. Maintain cleanliness of trash and recycling containers. Report work orders as needed to Customer Service. Make reports of safety concerns and of equipment repair needs. Maintain vehicles and moving equipment while demonstrating strict knowledge of and adherence to established safety guidelines and requirements. Maintain records of work completed and problems encountered. Prepare simple records. Have good communication skills and the ability to drive state vehicles. Must be familiar with the usage of simple hand tools and perform minor repairs. Perform event set-up and removal for Commencement and other special events. Drive heavy trucks to pick up and deliver materials; haul equipment on transporters to and from work sites. Paint traffic control markings and stencils on pavements and curbs using airless spray equipment and brushes. Install traffic control legends and crosswalks using per-cut tapes; install buttons and reflectors used for lane markers. Fabricate, install, and maintain traffic and other signs according to established standards; install raised traffic bars, guardrails, and reflectors. Read and interpret maps, manuals, and specifications. Maintain the drawbridge, including greasing the bridge, graffiti removal, and replacing boards. Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools, test equipment, and other equipment related to the work, including jackhammers, concrete saws, tampers, rollers, compressors, generators, spreader boxes, airless spray equipment, heat bonding machines, stripers, etc. Operate a variety of light and heavy trucks used in the work. Observe safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cone and flag worksites to secure from traffic; use appropriate safety equipment. Inspect vehicles and perform minor maintenance; report the need for major repairs and service; fuel and lubricate vehicles and related equipment; wash and clean assigned vehicles; operate assigned vehicles skillfully and safely; observe safe driving practices. Complete basic records related to work performed; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs; respond to emergency situations in off-hours as required; assist other divisions in maintenance activities as assigned. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of: Technique, material, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, traffic signing and painting work, and concrete work. Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work. Codes and regulations related to the work. Shop mathematics. Education and Experience Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Street Maintenance Worker I Experience: Six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work. Street Maintenance Worker II Experience: In addition to the above, two years of experience in street maintenance, concrete work, and traffic painting and signing work at a level equivalent to the Street Maintenance Worker I class. Certifications/Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license. Physical Demands and Working Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to perform heavy physical labor, including having sufficient strength to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 90 pounds. While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.
