Job Description

Type of Appointment: Full-Time, Management Personnel Plan (MPP I)

Anticipated Hiring Amount: $3,750 - $8,000 per month (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

THE DEPARTMENT

The W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center (AHC) is a legacy program of Cal Poly Pomona and promotes the historic W.K. Kellogg Arabians by providing a venue where students and the public can learn more about and engage with the Arabian Horse. The AHC provides an environment where students can learn about the Arabian horse in a learn-by-doing environment, supporting the educational mission of the university and continues the tradition of breeding and training of high-quality purebred Arabian horses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Horse Training
  • Manage the development and training of each horse by yourself, or thru developing, directing, and guiding AHC staff who also work with the training and development of the center’s horses.
  • Manage, develop, execute, and oversee the development of each horse’s training plans to ensure horses are physically and mentally prepared for success at the AHC and to ensure they are prepared for success after being sold at public auction.
  • In collaboration with the Breeding Coordinator, oversee training and development of all horses under three years of age, ensuring each foal confidently wear halters, lead safely around the property, have confidence with trimming hooves by farrier, lead in front of mare, stand confidently for grooming and basic clipping. Ensuring self-confidence in each foal. Horses three and under should be confident with leading around property, loading and unloading from trailer, stand quietly for bathing and farrier, and when tied. Ensure that the horses are overall safe to handle.
  • In collaboration with Coordinator of Horse Training staff, ensure horses in their “three-year-old” year are under saddle and meeting Arabian Horse industry targets. After horses three-year-old year, advance their individual training in alignment with Arabian horse industry best practices according to age.
  • In collaboration with Student Activates Coordinator, ensure new horses are being developed for student riding lessons and Sunday Shows. Oversee advanced levels of horse training for horses that are presented in the monthly Sunday Show, continually elevating the entertainment level of the exhibition while ensuring the shows have well prepared, safe, sound, horses.
  • In collaboration with AHC staff, ensure horses are safe for all teaching labs and other activities or experiences where horses are incorporated.
  • Identify individual horses that may be experiencing confusion or lack of understanding in their training, diagnose and develop new training plans for the horses so they become more self-confident and have a better training experience.
  • In collaboration with Executive Director, develop a set of standards and selection process for selecting horses to be retained for breeding, sale, or student use.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and update system to continually evaluate horses with an emphasis on determining which horses will be retained and which will be sold at public auction.
  • Develop and submit related reporting to the Executive Director (i.e., horse progress reports, stallion breeding selections, etc.)

Internal and External Operations
  • Manage and oversee livestock technicians and Student Activities Coordinator, to accomplish goals including instructional support. This may include providing mentorship to further the professional development of staff who work with the center’s horses. Work effectively with a diverse group of staff, students, and student employees and interact with the public and Arabian Horse Industry in a professional and congenial manner. Manage horse center related operational projects, including operating tractors, skid-steer, UTV’s and truck and horse trailer and minor maintenance projects.
  • Coordinate and delegate daily tasks and operations of the farm.
  • In collaboration with AHC staff, assist with student employees on day-to-day tasks to meet long-and short-term goals of the AHC. Clearly and effectively assist with training student assistants, monitor their work, and provide daily operations and feedback. Hire student employees and student assistants.
  • Provide instructional and research support as required, including assisting in instructional activities, and helping faculty or students work independently with horses.
  • Actively support all aspects of equine experiential activities (i.e., Teaching Horse and Horses for Hero’s).
  • As directed by the Executive Director, assist with training and developing student riders for the Sunday Shows.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, manage Summer Camp programs.
  • Bring issues, concerns, and recommendations regarding horses and the center’s daily operations to the Executive Director.
  • Support and implement University safety policies and procedures. Ensure IACUC policies are followed and assist with inspections as required.

Herd Health
  • Communicate and coordinate, in a timely manner, with AHC staff regarding the identification of health-related problems, the medical treatment of horses, movement of horses within the Center, the transfer of horses to or form the property, the interstate transfer of horses and any related activities. Assist with the transportation of horses as needed.
  • As required, assist Veterinarian and farrier with the handling of horses.
  • Manage the movement of horses in pastures ensuring horses are moved on a timely basis. Keep pasture health optimal to meet the nutritional needs of horses living on pasture full time while meeting the ascetics of the University.
  • Manage and assist AHC staff with routine herd health care, including but not limited to administering vaccinations, de-worming, and other routine and non-routine herd health care procedures.
  • Ensure AHC is always kept clean and safe for both horses and people and ensure stable is always presentable to the public.

Horse Sales
  • In collaboration with AHC staff, assist with public auctions, including but not limited to identifying sale horses based on operational needs, assisting in organizing marketing and publicity, communicating offerings to the industry, and coordinating with vendors. Assist with the preparations and presentations of sale horses to prospective buyers.
  • Manage and oversee livestock technicians and Student Activities Coordinator to accomplish the sale of horses.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 - 8 years’ experience managing an equine facility
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures used in agriculture/animal science/ equine industry/ranch management, personnel management, and safety.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety and regulations related to the handling and care of horses.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Engaging leadership style and record of accomplishment in management and horse training at a national level.
  • Ability to work well with and direct staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Thorough knowledge of the equine industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of training saddle seat, driving, western, and hunt seat style horses
  • Must be familiar with operating appropriate equestrian facility machinery and equipment and be adept in using standard office equipment including computers, phones, and copiers.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in animal science
  • Extensive experience (greater than 15 years) in equine management and training of Arabian show horses.
  • Active in the Arabian Horse industry.
  • Thorough understanding of Arabian horse pedigrees and selective breeding of Arabian horses.
  • Knowledge of foaling mares

CSU Classification Salary Range

The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $3,938 and maximum $11,703 per month.
