$18.19 per hour to $26.59 per hour

NOTE :

Employment as an Associate Community Officer is limited to a maximum of five years, during which time employees are required to promote to other City classes. However, it is expected that incumbents in this class will need no longer than 30 months to transition to another class. Appointments will be made to temporary training positions in accordance with Section 5.30 of the Rules of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners for a maximum duration of five years. New appointees who do not successfully complete the temporary training period will be terminated from the class.

DUTIES

In preparation for a career in law enforcement, an Associate Community Officer is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of law enforcement support duties under general supervision and performs related work as required. During the performance of job duties, Associate Community Officers may be rotated to varying assignments. It is expected that Associate Community Officers will be prepared to join the Police Department as Police Officers after time in this class.

REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law; and Current enrollment in or graduation from the Police Orientation and Preparation Program (POPP) and a digital invitation from the LAPD Personnel Division; or Graduation from a Police Academy Magnet School Program (PAMS) within the last two years and a digital invitation from the LAPD Personnel Division; or Current participation in the LAPD Cadet Program and a digital invitation from the LAPD Personnel Division; or Current enrollment in a College/University and a digital invitation from the LAPD Personnel Division; or Six months of experience as a volunteer or intern with the LAPD and a digital invitation from LAPD Personnel Division; or Current participation in a Community Based Organization (public or private nonprofit organization providing services to underserved communities with the Los Angeles area) and a digital invitation from the LAPD Personnel Division.

The copy of the digital invitation recommendation must be attached to the on-line application BEFORE the application is submitted. If the digital invitation is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted it. Applicants who fail to submit the digital invitation at the time of filing by attaching it to the on-line application will not be considered further in this examination.In addition to the regular City application form, each applicant is required to submit the Associate Community Officer Job Preview Questionnaire at the time of filing. The Associate Community Officer Job Preview Questionnaire is located within the Supplemental Questions Section of the City application. Applicants who fail to complete the Job Preview Questionnaire will not be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed.For applicants filing under Minimum Requirement #3 or #5 above, co-enrollment in college or university on at least a part-time basis is desired.Please note that desired education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency. Multiple-Choice Test: The multiple-choice test will evaluate factors including spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and clarity. Your passing score does not expire. If you fail the multiple-choice test then you can reapply after 60 days have passed from your most recent test session.

Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ): In order to better prepare for the exam and the physical demands of a career in law enforcement, candidates will be required to complete the Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ) prior to the interview. The PFQ consists of four events; maximum sit-ups in one minute, a 300 meter sprint, maximum push-ups in one minute, and a 1.5 mile run. The score on the PFQ is advisory and may be reviewed by the interview panel.

Interview: The examination score will be based entirely on the interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Learning Ability, Conscientiousness, Results Orientation, Customer Service, Emotional Maturity, Tolerance, Credibility, ability to Follow Oral Directions; and other necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.

  • Passing a thorough and comprehensive Background Investigation, AND
  • Completion of a thorough medical examination, AND
  • Based on City Policy, before being hired, candidates may be required to undergo a DRUG and ALCOHOL screening test.
