With general supervision, provides expert collection, preservation, scientific analysis, and documentation of fingerprint evidence in criminal matters; conducts examinations of physical evidence for latent fingerprints in the laboratory; provides training to others in technical skills; and performs other duties as required within the scope of the classification.

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

Performs fingerprint comparisons and identifications; identifies, develops, evaluates, lifts, preserves and compares fingerprints using developing powders, chemicals, dyes, lasers, photography, Photoshop digital enhancement, and other physical techniques.

Prepares, enters and compares fingerprints using the California Automated Fingerprint Identification System; prepares findings for court presentation; prepares court exhibits; testifies in court as an expert witness concerning the scientific facts as established in the analysis of fingerprint evidence. Maintains fingerprint records and files.

Studies and applies new techniques and procedures in the field of fingerprints; Consults and coordinates with other law enforcement agencies; provides technical training in the field of forensic fingerprint examinations and procedures; consults with staff, detectives, police officers, deputy district attorneys and other law enforcement officials regarding procedures and analyses.

The preceding duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. The City, at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Fingerprint Examiner is a journey level position that analyzes, compares and identifies fingerprints related to criminal activities; performs specialized chemical and mechanical processing of evidence in the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

Education equivalent to graduation from high school; one year of work experience performing fingerprint comparisons and identifications, AFIS/ABIS operation, photography and court testimony.

Satisfactory completion of a fingerprint identification course covering classifying, searching, comparing and identifying partial, single, multiple and distorted palm and fingerprints or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge and abilities listed below:

Knowledge of : principles, methods, procedures, materials and techniques of fingerprint identification; California Automated Fingerprint Identification System; latent fingerprint development, collection and preservation techniques; photography techniques.

Ability to : perform fingerprint analysis, comparison and identification; compose reports summarizing findings; present evidence in court as an expert witness; use various laboratory equipment and fingerprint development techniques, lasers and alternate light sources, and Photoshop Digital Enhancement.

License and Certification: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license; must be court qualified latent print examiner; must be able to pass an extensive background process.

Part-Time employees accrue paid sick leave at the rate of one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every thirty (30) hours worked up to a maximum accrual of 6 days or 48 hours. Employees are eligible to use 3 days or 24 hours of accrued paid sick leave in a 12-month period.
