About the Position of Director of Academic Employee Relations:

The Director of Academic Employee Relations for the Office of Faculty Affairs will work collaboratively with various campus departments and administrators to foster a community of care at the university. Based in CSUN’s belief that a respectful and equitable learning, living, and working environment is paramount to enabling our students to achieve their educational goals and our faculty and staff to thrive personally and professionally, the Director will lead CSUN’s training and education efforts for academic employees to ensure an understanding of a positive workplace environment. The Director will also respond to academic employees’ concerns, mediates conversations, conducts workplace investigations as needed, and will assist in coordinating appropriate responses including letters of reprimand and discipline. A specific focus for the Director will be the development and implementation of initiatives that promote a safe learning and working environment and that prevent and raise awareness of inappropriate or unprofessional conduct of concern that may fall outside of CSU policy and/or legal protected statuses for allegations of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in labor relations, human resources management, organizational planning/policy, or related field, or JD.
  • Three years professional experience, with two years in the fields of education, prevention, advocacy, mediation, or comparable work experience.
  • Two years of leadership experience in academic employee relations including resolving/processing complaints and conducting workplace investigations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and/or delivering evidence-based educational programs and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience with successful mediations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of free speech and academic freedom
  • Demonstrated experience providing ethical leadership characterized by good judgement and discretion including maintaining appropriate confidentiality.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training and experience with multiple mediation methods including restorative justice.
  • Job related experience demonstrating commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills at management level.
  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment in a university setting.
  • Knowledge of CSU/California EEO policies, procedures, and regulations.

Salary/Benefits:
  • Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience. The University offers excellent fringe benefits.
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE:$110,000 to $120,000 dependent upon qualifications and experience.
