Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services and in accordance with established schedules or periodic instructions, the Groundsworker performs general gardening maintenance work in various areas of the campus, including parking lots and structures, for the purpose of preserving the campus grounds in a healthy, attractive, and safe condition. Incumbent assists with event support including preparation and clean-up.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime compensation under FLSA). Position is benefits-eligible.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,750 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,545 per month - $5,562 per month

Time Base: Full-Time

Work Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 6:00a.m. - 2:30p.m, with the ability to work early morning hours, extended afternoons, and weekends.

Department Information

Grounds and Landscaping Services is responsible for maintaining 170 landscaped acres and over 3,000 trees. We also have responsibility for maintaining walkways and parking improvements. Grounds and Landscape Services trims, irrigates, cleans, fertilizes, provides pest control, and renovates campus site improvements that encompass:
  • Over 3,000 trees, comprising 250 species
  • 93 acres of lawn/turf
  • 16 acres of shrubs and ground cover
  • More than 21 miles of campus walkways
  • 60 acres of parking lots
  • 25 acres of undeveloped space
  • Irrigation systems comprising 5 well pumps, 7 zone controllers, 750 valves, and 12,000 sprinklers heads

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.

Abilities:

Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Experience:

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

License:

Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver’s license.

Required Qualifications

Experience:
Experience with general landscape maintenance, planting, cultivating, and fertilizing. Experience maintaining and repairing sprinklers.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of proper pruning and shrub/tree trimming techniques. Knowledge of appropriate safety practices.
Skills/Abilities:
Ability to perform general maintenance on gardening equipment (e.g. mowers, power edgers, vacuums, string trimmers, chain saws, blowers, etc.) Effective communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a diverse environment. Ability to assist with athletic and special event set-up and clean up. Ability to assist qualified personnel with gardening related duties. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community
Work Schedule Requirements:
Ability to work weekends, early work shifts, and/or other change in work schedule.
License:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to frequently lift and carry gardening equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.
Conditions of Employment:

- Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in athletic and special event preparation and cleanup. Ability to perform light irrigation repair work. General knowledge of plant materials utilized in the landscape field and that are appropriate to this climate zone. General understanding of turf care, including fertilizer and soil amendment applications.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid driver's license and maintenance of a good driving record.
