Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Stockroom Support Technician prepares materials and equipment for academic teaching laboratories, organizes equipment needs, updates materials, record keeps, follows safety protocols, and assists other faculty, staff, students, and student assistants. The incumbent works alone or with a team to prepare materials, including gases, liquids, solutions and solids, glassware, and other technical equipment while following all applicable safety rules, chemical hygiene, and other standards.
  • Distributes materials and equipment to and from laboratories, staffs the stockroom window, and aids research students and faculty with requests for research support, identifying equipment and material needs.
  • Maintains and repairs simple lab equipment needed for student laboratories, maintains supply and equipment inventories, and collaborates with asset management to relocate or remove unused equipment.
  • Develops new instructional materials, runs experiments as pilots, improves student experiments as necessary and as directed, introduces new methods, edits student laboratory manuals, and produces instructional videos.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to two (2) years of experience providing instructional support services for a Chemistry or Biochemistry unit or related discipline acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline preferred - OR
  • Equivalent to an AA degree with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a related discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience - OR
  • Equivalent to a BA degree with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience. [NOTE: Number of units and courses must be included on resume if using education substitution].
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biochemistry preferred.
  • Experience in academic laboratory preparation and with handling chemical substances, including hazardous materials, preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of: principles of providing support services; the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; the materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
  • Ability and specialized skills to evaluate the materials and supplies used; learn to adjust and make minor repairs on scientific equipment; operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results; plan activities and prepare schedules; use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.
  • Ability to: work with attention to detail; exercise good judgment; recognize and solve problems; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; provide good customer service; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; work both independently and as a team.
  • Extensive knowledge of: general laboratory methods, procedures, chemical properties, nomenclature, basic equipment and glassware, common calculations to prepare materials for laboratories. Demonstrated chemical handling, waste handling, and record keeping abilities.


Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification: Instructional Support Technician I / 1615 / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $4006 - $4100 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4006 - $6951 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
