Anticipated annual salary range by rank:
Professor: $142,000 -155,000

Associate Professor: $119,000 - 131,000

The Salaries above include additional compensation for chair service that will be deducted from the incumbent's salary upon the end of the chair assignment. The ranges above correspond with base academic year salaries of Professor: $120,000 - 130,000; Associate Professor: $100,000 - $110,000.

Position Description

The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for the position of Department Chair. The Department Chair will provide visionary leadership to further the department’s mission, promote research and teaching excellence of the department, manage and secure resources for departmental initiatives, lead a diverse and inclusive community of students, staff and faculty, and maintain productive relationships with department stakeholders. Candidates are expected to have a strong record of accomplishment in administrative activities, research and teaching.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders or closely related fields
  • Current CCC-SLP and eligible for California SLP license
  • Established record of administrative responsibilities in higher education
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, service, research, scholarly and creative activities for appointment as a tenured associate professor or full professor.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.


Preferred Qualifications


Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
  • Experience with university academic administrative positions
  • Experience with program accreditation and assessment
  • Experience with project management, strategic planning, and budgeting
  • Experience with developing and maintaining interdisciplinary partnerships
  • Expertise in speech, language or hearing, with preferences in swallowing, motor speech and/or speech sciences


Key Responsibilities

  • Actively advocate and secure resources for the department within and outside the university, including professional and academic groups at local, regional, state, and national levels.
  • Effectively communicate department mission, vision and values with stakeholders and respond effectively to concerns and issues.
  • Provide visionary leadership in strategic planning and its implementation to guide the future of the department.
  • Oversee program assessment, improvement and alignment with WASC, ASHA CAA and CCTC accreditation standards and department vision.
  • Effectively manage department resources, budget and space with equity and transparency.
  • Promptly manage the recruitment, assignment and performance evaluation of faculty/staff.
  • Provide administrative oversight and mentorship for the retention, tenure, and promotion of tenure-line faculty.
  • Partner with university departments/units and community organizations to develop sustainable inter-professional training opportunities for students.
  • Participate in professional organizations governing academic programs and practices in communicative disorders and sciences.
  • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.


Other Duties


Note that all San José State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, some faculty duties may lead to designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to complete Clery Act training and to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution.

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety). The President may recommend or require compliance with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness and allows the core mission and activities of the campus to continue.
