Job Description

California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, 60 miles east of Los Angeles and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20,000 students, of which 81% are first-generation college students and graduates about 5,000 students annually. As a designated Hispanic Serving Institution, CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has one of the most diverse student populations of any university in the Inland Empire, and the second highest Hispanic enrollment of all public universities in California. CSUSB employs 467 full-time faculty and offers 48 undergraduate, 35 graduate, and one doctoral degree programs and 14 academic programs with national accreditation.

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Sociology at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications for the position of Department Chair to begin August 19, 2024. The ideal candidate will be an experienced faculty member with demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, an established record of scholarly research, and evidence of commitment to student success. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in shaping and facilitating the future of the department including faculty and staff development, faculty mentoring, strategic

planning, and student recruitment and success initiatives. The Department Chair will also serve in a leadership capacity in support of the mission of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will provide responsible and professional leadership in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department, including supervision of support staff, scheduling courses, evaluating and mentoring faculty, fiscal management and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research and service activities. The Chair will also represent the Department and College with on and off-campus constituencies, and maintain positive public relations with these groups. Qualified candidates must

demonstrate a commitment to leadership and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The Candidate must have a PhD in Sociology and be qualified for tenure at the rank of associate or full professor. Areas of sociological specialization are open. We welcome applications from all areas and specializations of research in Sociology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with a strong vision in leadership and faculty and student growth.

Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Sociology at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications for the position of Department Chair at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank beginning July 1, 2018. The ideal candidate will be an experienced faculty member with demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, an established record or scholarly research and evidence of excellence in teaching. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in facilitating long-term planning for professional involvement and development of the faculty and the Department, and mentor faculty in effectively meeting their responsibilities in scholarship, teaching, and service. The Sociology Department is located in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology and Sociology-Social Services Track. The department has 12 full-time tenure track faculty members and over 700 undergraduate

majors.
