Job Description

COMMUNICATION STUDIES DEPARTMENT - Full-time Lecturer in the Communication Studies Department, College of Liberal Arts, Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, California to begin September 16, 2024. Recruitment is for three positions, each with a two-year appointment for the 24/25 and 25/26 Academic Year. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Primary duties and responsibilities include teaching basic oral communication courses. Additional teaching responsibilities may include teaching classes in communication theory, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, small group communication, media studies, intercultural communication and/or argumentation, depending on department need as well as applicant background. The teaching load is 3 - 4 four-unit courses per quarter, with a total of 45 units across the academic year. A.B.D. or Ph.D. in Communication or closely related field and a successful teaching record in oral communication courses are required.

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2022, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Lecturer A: $4,530-$6,056
Lecturer B: $5,405-$11,994
Lecturer C: $6,190-$13,172
Lecturer D: $7,794-$13,797

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A.B.D. or Ph.D. in Communication or closely related field and teaching record in oral communication courses are required.

Candidates should provide evidence of a demonstrated commitment to successful undergraduate teaching. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate attention to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching. Candidates must also demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Currently the Communication Studies Department, in the College of Liberal Arts, has 11 communication professors, and over 30 lecturers, approximately half of whom teach full-time. The department serves approximately 400 majors and 50 minors as well as students throughout the university in our many General Education course offerings.
