Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $8,000 - $9,167 per month

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,088 - $11,748 per month
  • This is a full-time, probationary, exempt position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice nurse who works as a primary care provider in ambulatory care clinics in accordance with State and Federal rules and regulations and nursing standards of care assessment of health status, diagnosis, develops/implements plan of care/treatment, and evaluates patient outcomes. They provide general and preventive health care, conduct check-ups, support sexual health education and medication abortion services, treat illnesses/minor injuries, order lab/x-ray tests, and make referrals to health providers in the community and to specialty services within the health center. This position serves the students of California State University, Fresno. This position reports to the Director of Medical Services in the Student Health & Counseling Center.

Key Qualifications
  • Knowledge to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, a comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures.
  • A thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice; and the ability to employ them ethically.
  • A thorough knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • General knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices, if assigned lead work direction.
  • Ability to:
    • Work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals.
    • Use clinical techniques/examinations, and diagnostic tools.
    • Interpret laboratory, drug interactions, and all other study results.
    • Keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent's scope of practice.
    • Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with other health center staff.
    • Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
    • Work with a diverse population of students including LGBTQ +, faculty and staff.
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Education and Experience
  • Nurse Practitioners must possess an academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university based Nurse Practitioner program or possess equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and must possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.
  • Two or more years of experience as a nurse practitioner.
  • Experience as a nurse practitioner in an ambulatory health care setting.
  • Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN Certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. National certification is preferred, but not required. In addition, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate, as well as BLS certification.
    • Preferred Skills:
      • Five or more years as a nurse practitioner.
      • MSN preferred.
      • Experience as a nurse practitioner providing sexual health, family planning, and legally mandated abortion services.
      • Experience in a college/university student health center.
      • Experience working with a range of professional categories such as physicians, other nurse practitioners, registered nurses, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals.
      • Preference will be given to those with additional skills or certification to perform special procedures, such as IUC Insertion/removal, Nexplanon insertion and removal, colposcopy, suturing, skin biopsies, etc.
      • Possess a working knowledge of Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMR).
      • National certification is preferred.
