COLLEGE: College of Social Sciences & Interdisciplinary Studies DEPARTMENT: Environmental Studies POSITION TITLE: Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Environmental Health Equity DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Department of Environmental Studies has five tenure/tenure track faculty and 12 lecturers serving more than 200 undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds, including 33% underrepresented minorities and 23% first generation college students. Our majors are required to complete courses in social and natural sciences, an internship, and a thesis. We offer a B.S., B.A., and minor in Environmental Studies. The Department of Environmental Studies is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of 11 academic departments, three independent and interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes. The College is a congenial and cohesive unit both academically and administratively. POSITION DETAILS: This is a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Environmental Studies beginning in the Fall 2024 semester.
The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 - $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $75,000. Salary will be dependent upon CSU system-wide ranges, qualifications, and professional experience.
JOB DUTIES: Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses
• Developing courses for the ENVS program, including a cross-listed course with the Department of Public Health
• Advise/supervise student research
• Engage in scholarly activities including developing research program/agenda and publishing peer-reviewed articles
• Provide service to the department, college, university, and the environmental community
• Seek sponsored funding, contribute to grant submission and administration
The Department of Environmental Studies policy for retention, tenure, and promotion includes the following evaluation criteria and weighting:
• Teaching performance - 60%
• Scholarly and creative achievement - 15%
• Contributions to local, state, national and international community - 15%
• Contributions to the University - 10%
California State University (CSU) faculty positions are covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (aka “Contract”) between the California Faculty Association (a union) and the CSU. The Contract establishes rights and responsibilities of faculty and provides a basis for university, college, and departmental policies governing faculty job duties and performance evaluation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - PhD or terminal degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, or a related discipline. ABD applicants will be considered. If ABD, all requirements for the degree must be completed by August 2024.
- Demonstrated background in environmental health and equity.
- Demonstrated experience (or potential for) teaching and advising or mentoring diverse undergraduate and graduate students.
- Willingness to develop a cross-listed course between the Environmental Studies and Public Health Departments.
- Proven ability to develop a robust research or scholarship program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Demonstrated commitment to working and/or collaborating with underserved communities outside the university.
- Demonstrated commitment to innovative pedagogy.
- Interdisciplinary experience using data.
- Experience working with or in government or industry.
