California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for two tenure track assistant professor positions in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona, and 41% of new students were transfers in Fall 2022. 57% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 53% Latinx, 22% Asian, 14% White, 3% Black, 2% International, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

College of Engineering. The College of Engineering ’ s mission is to prepare students for industry and advanced studies by implementing an inclusive polytechnic philosophy through collaborative teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional integrity. The College offers 12 ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees and 7 Master ’ s degrees to over 6,300 students across seven academic departments that include: Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The College is nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report and currently ranks 5th among undergraduate engineering programs in non-doctorate-granting public institutions. Additionally, it houses more than 40 student clubs that offer hands-on learning opportunities and have been recognized at several national competitions. Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. The Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) Department at Cal Poly Pomona has two undergraduate programs, Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering, as well as two master’s programs, Engineering Management, and Systems Engineering. The IME department is among a few departments in the state of California that offers a Manufacturing Engineering program. Its strategic location makes it possible to collaborate with various industries in the region. During the last decade, the department has grown from about two hundred students to four hundred and fifty. Our students and faculty come from a diverse set of backgrounds. Currently, the department has ten tenured/tenure-track faculty members and about twenty lecturers who cumulatively teach an average of hundred sections of our courses per semester. Committed to the PolyX experience, the Department provides students with access to several laboratories designed for instructions of Industrial and Manufacturing courses. Among those are machining and automation laboratories. The IME department is student-focused and strives to build a safe environment for faculty, staff, and students so that they can communicate productively and build healthy relationships. The department also aims to build and benefit from strong industry relationships. We strongly believe in the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the integral roles they play in achieving teaching, research, and service excellence.

Position description. The Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department invites applications at the Assistant Professor level for two tenure-track faculty positions beginning August 2024/Fall semester to teach a broad range of courses in manufacturing engineering and industrial engineering with primary responsibilities in one or more of the following areas:
Advanced manufacturing systems and technologies: The candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of classes in manufacturing engineering areas, the candidate’s research will focus on advanced manufacturing engineering systems and technologies. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning with application in manufacturing engineering: The candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of classes in both industrial engineering and manufacturing engineering areas; the candidate research will focus on AI and machine learning with applications in various areas including manufacturing engineering.
The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of the department’s mission, including teaching, and advising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, developing curriculum and laboratories, establishing a well-funded research program, and participating in service to the department, college, university, and the profession.

Minimum requirements include:
  • Ph.D. in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical engineering, or a closely aligned field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Academic experience and strength in advanced and traditional manufacturing systems and technologies including, but not limited to, Additive Manufacturing, Semiconductor Manufacturing, MEMS/NEMS, Bio-Manufacturing, Intelligent Manufacturing, Smart/Digital Manufacturing (Digital Twins, AI and Machine Learning with application in manufacturing systems, cloud and reconfigurable manufacturing, human-system interaction using virtual reality, etc.), Sustainable Manufacturing, Plastics, Composite, Machining and Casting Industrial experience in the manufacturing-related processes that will enhance teaching and research Demonstrated ability in university teaching, mentoring and supervising students, and/or improving industrial and manufacturing engineering curricula Demonstrated ability for authoring peer-reviewed publications and/or securing external funds Strong communication skills

  • make a presentation of scholarly work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and students.
