DEFINITION: Under the direction of a licensed and qualified pathologist, prepares and performs gross examination and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens and human postmortem examinations. Essential Job Functions Prepares surgical specimen for pathology gross examination through a comprehensive macroscopic examination and evaluation of all surgical pathological specimens, including measuring, weighing, inking margins, dissecting, and sectioning tissues. Obtains relevant clinical information, identifies necessary techniques or procedures, describes gross anatomic features of specimens, dissects surgical specimens, and prepares tissue for histological examination. Obtains related clinical history (i.e., scans, x-rays, and laboratory data) to direct the processing of specimens. Obtains biological specimens for studies, such as flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, etc. Assists the Pathologist with rendering the provisional gross anatomic diagnosis, through observations made in dissection. Performs frozen sectioning and staining for intraoperative consultation. Performs biomedical photography of specimens. Performs postmortem examinations including external examinations, in situ organ inspections, evisceration, dissection and recording of applicable data. Moves bodies from crypt to autopsy table and manipulates other large surgical specimens. Updates and maintains laboratory databases and orders supplies for the grossing and frozen section rooms. Fulfills administrative duties in the grossing room, including coordination of specimen type to grossing station, accessioning specimens, managing holding times for stored specimens after processing, and managing inventory. Assists in troubleshooting workflow issues and recommends changes using process improvement techniques. Acts as a preceptor and assists Pathologist in training pathology residents and other pathology lab personnel. Assists in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences. Communicates with surgeons, pathologists, residents, and ancillary medical staff for continuity of care concerning orientation, gross findings, and margins. Assists in maintaining surgical pathology policies, protocols, procedures, and quality reports. Participates in departmental inspections and surveys to ensure regulatory compliance. Assists in obtaining proper legal authorizations for autopsies and notifies appropriate authorities to coordinate requests for tissue sampling. Assist with receiving and processing cytology specimens (i.e., gynecological and non gynecological) as needed. Perform accessioning of specimens as needed. Requirements Minimum Requirements: LICENSE: Current certification* as a Pathologists’ Assistant from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION: This position is subject to the provisions of the Management Appraisal of Performance Plan (MAPP). Initial salary placement and subsequent salary adjustments will be made in accordance with MAPP guidelines and regulations. DEFINITION: Assists in the planning, direction, coordination, and evaluation of Public Health Laboratory technical and administrative operations and services in the Department of Public Health. CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS: The one position allocable to this class reports to the Public Health Laboratory Director and, under general direction and guidance, assists in the planning, direction, and evaluation of public health laboratory operations, activities, and services. This responsibility includes planning, directing, assigning, and evaluating the work of major technical laboratory sections including Bacteriology/Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, Virology, and Immunology; and providing supervision and guidance to public health microbiologist supervisors. The Public Health Laboratory Assistant Director also assists in the development and formulation of public health laboratory policies, procedures, and objectives in support of various clinical, medical, and environmental health programs and the prevention of communicable disease and other public health-related illnesses. In addition, this position assists in the management and control of the laboratory's budget, personnel, and other administrative functions. Essential Job Functions Assists in planning, organizing, and directing laboratory operations and in the administration and implementation of laboratory objectives, policies, and procedures to ensure effective and efficient services and compliance with established standards, rules, and regulations. Assists the Public Health Laboratory Director in the development, implementation, and assessment of long-range and short-term goals; conducts studies and analyzes reports and makes recommendations concerning laboratory staffing, organization, budget, and work flow. Coordinates Public Health Laboratory operations and services with the operations of other local, state, Public Health and personal health programs. Develop and/or refine grant narratives, justifications, performance evaluations, implementation plans, and milestones for competitive grants. Develop and deliver training for LIMS implementation, grant completion, and administrative procedures. Other Duties: Lead and coordinate technical investigations and manage technology resolution implementations for PHL activities. Perform technical tasks like LIMS installations, environment refreshes, backups, performance tracking, etc. Develop crystal reports and ad hoc queries (SQL) based on user requirements. Liaise with LIMS vendors, other internal technology groups, and business partners on technology change governance and change prioritization. Ensure information security; access, use, and safeguard sensitive information to ensure HIPPA compliance. Formulates and defines the scope of work for major upgrades to LIMS with an understanding of applicable systems and laboratory requirements. Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably within the scientific fields of biology, biochemistry, or chemistry. Applicants must have extensive technical knowledge of diagnostic laboratory processes and procedures including at least one year of laboratory bench experience while being familiar with federal regulatory statutes governing clinical laboratories. The candidate must have advanced knowledge and experience with at least one laboratory information management system (LIMS). Administrative experience with other software packages is beneficial. Preferred Qualifications: A working knowledge and understanding of laboratory operations, workflows, and testing algorithms for clinical laboratory analyses Familiar with emergency preparedness or infectious disease outbreak investigations Understanding of SQL database queries and relationships Understanding of system enhancement principles and tools, such as Design/Coding/Performance/Maintenance Familiar with 21 CFR Part 11 compliance and computer system validation Demonstrate initiative in learning and utilizing new technologies Analytical ability to effectively identify issues that affect workflow performance, and provide solutions to improve the performance of the LIMS Experience creating and modifying Crystal Reports Preferred knowledge of development tools and languages: SQL Visual Basic Visual Basic .NET ZPL (Zebra) PCL JavaScript Jscript.NET HTML LIMS Basic (LabWare language) ASTM E1381 ASTM E1394 XML HL7 ORU Script parsers Physical Demands and Work Environment: This position is set in a laboratory environment.
