ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS annually provides direct care for over 600,000, unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of over $6.9 billion.

Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings. .

DEFINITION:
Performs semi-skilled work assisting journey or higher-level bricklayers, plasterers, or masonry workers in construction, alteration, and repair work.

Essential Job Functions

Assists journey-level masonry workers in bricklaying, tile or marble setting, metal lathing, cement work, or interior and exterior plastering, as directed.

Assists in the mixing of plaster, mortar, stucco, cement, and other plastic materials used in the various masonry trades.

Assists in placing or replacing lath, wire mesh, channel iron, and reinforcing rods.

Assists in cutting marble, tile, and brick to proper shape and size.

Prepares surfaces by removing loose materials.

Operates pneumatic-powered digging or breaking tools as necessary.

Assists in setting and removing forms.

Patches asphalt paving.

Helps erect and dismantle scaffolding.

Maintains tools and equipment.

Cleans work areas.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites when needed.

Excavates and prepares soil for pouring concrete.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
OPTION I: One (1) year of experience assisting in stone masonry, tile or marble setting, bricklaying, plastering, metal lathing, or cement and concrete work.

OPTION II: Completion of 600 hours of instruction in masonry courses in a high school, college, the armed forces of the United States, or other recognized school*.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS IV:

This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION :
*Recognized school is defined as an approved agency including but limited to agencies such as the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and the International Masonry Institute.

To qualify for Option II a legible photocopy of required certificate must be attached at the time of filing. EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an in-person interview which will assess Job Preparation, Knowledge and Skills, Oral Communication and Problem Solving, weighted 100%

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SPECIAL INFORMATION :

Available Shift

Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
