General Description and Classification Standards

The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) was created to improve how Atlanta manages transportation and its right of way. One of the main goals of the department and the city’s Strategic Transportation Plan is to improve safety on the city’s streets and to improve the experience of pedestrians, transit riders, cyclists, and scooter riders.

The Transportation Safety Intern will support ATLDOT’s Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School program efforts. This may include supporting planning, concept design, data analysis, and engagement efforts for transportation projects from conception to implementation, including comprehensive community and public engagement.

This internship opportunity is suited to current undergraduate/graduate students, or new graduates looking to start a career in transportation planning, road safety, multimodal roadway infrastructure, and active transportation.

Supervision Received

This position will receive direct supervision from one or more experienced planners and program managers within ATLDOT.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Minimum Experience
  • Must be eighteen years of age or older
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States of America
  • Must be true rising sophomore and above
  • Minimum overall GPA 3.0
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a graduate or undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs

Essential Capabilities and Work Environment

Position will work primarily in-person, with some availability for hybrid work, in an office setting during normal city hall business hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Site visits within the City of Atlanta will also be required on an as needed basis.
