The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is a full service agency that oversees the adult jail, provides patrol, criminal investigations, civil process and search and rescue operations. ABOUT THE JOB:
The Sheriff's Office Mechanic responsible for performing a variety of skilled mechanical repairs, diagnostic inspections, preventative maintenance, tire replacement and repairs, welding and fabrication, and use of diagnostic testing equipment and modifications to automotive and other machinery. Must be able to work 8 or 10 hours shifts, to include evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet the needs of the unit.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnosis, repairs and adjustments.
  • Weld, fabricate and modify equipment.
  • Engine performance.
  • Perform engine performance tests and repairs on diesel and gas engines using diagnostic tools.
  • Plan and organize work independently.
What You Will Bring:
Knowledge of or experience with:
  • Standard methods, materials, tools, equipment, and technology of the mechanic trade.
  • Mechanical principles, occupational hazards and safety precautions of mechanic trade.
  • Testing equipment for testing and repairing of starting systems, charging systems, front end repair, engine performance testing, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, fuel systems, drive trains and related automotive and heavy equipment components.
Skill in:
  • Driving all County equipment/vehicles on roads to test drive and diagnose equipment.
  • Using good judgment and make decisions in stressful situations, and analyzing and adapting to new situations quickly.
  • Locating, diagnosing and repairing most mechanical malfunctions in gas and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other public and private employees.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of the classification.

Compensation

$4,409.00 to $5,978.39 per month for a 173.33 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) years mechanic experience preferably including experience in maintenance and repair of equipment;
  • Or satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training as determined by hiring authority.


Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

Physical Requirements. This position requires the ability to stand, kneel, walk, squat, and twist while repairing automobiles; may lift automobile parts weighing up to 75 pounds; must have the ability to climb a step ladder while carrying automobile parts weighing up to 75 pounds; climb in and out of a variety of automobiles and heavy equipment; drive automatic and manual transmission automobiles; push/pull automotive parts up to 75 pounds; and use a variety of tools including pry bars to repair automobiles.

Must pass a driving record review and criminal history background.
  • A current driver's license and the state of origin are required. Candidates who wish to be considered for this position must include an accurate driver's license number and state of origin on their application under the Personal Information section . Failure to provide this information will result in disqualification.
  • Background Investigation: A complete and full background investigation will be completed prior to a candidate receiving a conditional job offer.
