The Position

Curators perform a broad range of professional and technical museum work involving, but not limited to, assessment, evaluation, survey, inventory, preservation, research, education and planning for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas (NSMLV) in the Division of Museums and History within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Registrar. The NSMLV is a public visitor and educational institution that incorporates the functions of a flagship cultural and natural history museum, exhibits and programs venue, research library and archives, academic research, and educational offerings for all ages. The Registrar works in conjunction with the Curator of History and Material Culture, and the Curator of Natural History to help establish, oversee, and implement the NSMLV Collections Management Policy and procedures including collections plans, repository agreements, permitting and compliance reporting, recordkeeping, care, storage, accessibility, and use restrictions for all NSMLV collections- Artifacts, Manuscripts, Photography, and Research Library. Oversees the processing and appropriate storage of all three-dimensional collection materials, the security and care of these collections; Manage NSMLV loans; Create and maintain discoverable collections records for the artifact collections, exhibits, and loans; directs and trains interns, volunteers, and staff in collections management policies and procedures. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies, education, or closely related field plus one year of technical experience in a museum. This experience must have included collections registration, cataloging, basic archival research and/or developing, promoting, executing and evaluating educational programming; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment. This position may require to travel at least 25% of the time.
