The Position

Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

The Bureau of Sustainable Material Management is recruiting for an Environmental Scientist III . This position will be a hazardous waste inspector in the Compliance and Enforcement Branch. The candidate will research and develop/maintain monitoring and inspection programs to ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations associated with the management of hazardous waste in Nevada. The candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills and be able to support and facilitate dialogue with stakeholders. They must be able to organize and lead group discussions that produce consensus and solidarity. The successful applicant must be able to read, understand and interpret regulatory language; be able to work independently in the field and the office environments; communicate effectively with the public, the regulated community, stakeholders, and DEP administration; and be able to be in the field up to 50% of the time, including some extended travel. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and three years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements This position has a 25% travel requirement. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.
