A Wastewater Treatment System Operator I is an integral part of the wastewater collection system whose mission is to keep the community wastewater system functioning by operating, inspecting, monitoring, and adjusting wastewater treatment plant operations to ensure proper processing and compliance with permits!

This position is crafted for individuals who will be able to obtain a Grade I Operator's certificate within one year of employment and who have graduated from high school or with an equivalent GED and some working background or training in wastewater treatment facility and sewage collection systems operations, maintenance, or repair.

Knowledge of:
  • Basic principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant operations
  • Operating principles and maintenance procedures for valves, pumps, and motors
  • Basic principles and methods of bacteriological and chemical sewage sample collection and analysis
  • Inspection, maintenance, and repair of sewage collection systems
  • Safe work practices
Skill in:
  • Operating, repairing, and maintaining wastewater treatment plant equipment
  • Reading and interpreting gauges and other recording devices reflecting wastewater treatment plant operations
  • Performing routine laboratory tests on wastewater and sludge samples
  • Maintaining logs, records, reports, and charts
  • Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing sewage collection systems
  • Using tools and equipment necessary for wastewater treatment plant and sewage collection system maintenance and repairs
  • Understanding verbal and written directions
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Education and Experience Required

Graduation from high school or equivalent GED and some working background or training in wastewater treatment facility and sewage collection systems operations, maintenance, or repair.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid California driver's license within 30 days of hire. Possession of Grade I certification from the California State Water Resources Control Board, as issued through procedures established by the Board, within one year of employment.

Retirement
The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.

Tier 3 (Hired by first CalPERS employer on or after 1/1/13 or having a break in service of more than six months between another CalPERS employer and Nevada County) 2%@62

Tier 1 (Classic-former employees originally hired on or before 12/13/12 and are returning to Nevada County) 3% @ 50.

Tier 2 (Hired by a CalPERS employer between 7/2411-12/31/12 and coming to Nevada County with less than 6-months between separation from former CalPERS employer and hire date with Nevada County) 3% @ 55.

Tier 3 (Hired by any CalPERS employer on or after 1/1/13) 2.7% @ 57.
