Our attorneys are recognized throughout the state for providing vigorous, client-centered advocacy. Deputy Public Defender III attorneys are assigned to one of the department’s various units, including the felony unit, the juvenile unit, the mental health unit, the post-conviction unit, and the research & writing unit. What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Representing clients charged with felony offenses
  • Interviewing and advising clients on their constitutional rights, criminal charges or potential charges
  • Devising trial strategy and initiating necessary investigation for each case
  • Identifying sentencing options and negotiating the best resolution for each client
  • Conducting legal research and preparing necessary documents
  • Advising and mentoring Deputy Public Defenders in lower classifications

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License will be accepted during the application process.

Registration: Active membership in the State Bar of California

When Assigned as a Deputy Public Defender III - Criminal Defense Attorney:

Experience: Either 1) three (3) years of experience in the private sector or nonprofit law office practicing criminal law or criminal appellate law; or 2) two (2) years of full-time experience as a Deputy Public Defender in a California County or the State Public Defender’s Office.

Selection Process

(Weighted 100%)Final Selection Interviews: These will be scheduled by the department once the eligible list is established.

CONVICTION HISTORY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
