Description:

Under general supervision, the Permit Technician is responsible for performing technical and administrative work in support of the Building Safety Division. Review and approve permit applications, determine permit fees. Serve as account technician and cashier for the Division. Respond to inquiries from various officials, agencies and the public regarding building codes and permits. Research issues related to building codes, permits and inspections. Enter data and prepare a variety of records and reports. Assist visitors and callers at the public counter. Process and issue permits, contractor licenses, and certificates of occupancy. Receive, process and deposit payments for permits and related fees. Maintain a supply of office supplies and forms. Perform a variety of technical and administrative duties.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate thrives in a front-facing, client-focused environment and provides clerical and general customer service support. This individual will have a construction or development background with a basic understanding of the permitting process and the ability to guide and advise customers about the various stages of the process. The successful candidate handles sensitive and confidential information and situations, demonstrating poise, tact and diplomacy with a positive attitude and nonjudgmental manner.This person must be innovative, dependable and relentlessly detail-oriented. The candidate must also have the proven ability to move between diverse tasks with ease, and must thrive in a deadline-driven, professional environment.

This position operates on our four-day work week (Monday-Thursday). This position is hybrid, with remote work and in-office work as needed once a training period has been completed.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $26.00 - $29.00 USD Hourly

Total Base Pay Range: 22.84 - 28.55 - 34.26 USD Hourly

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience and skills.

Essential Duties:
  • Process and issue permits and certificates of occupancy to include assisting contractors, homeowners and the general public in person at the front counter. Responding to inquiries regarding building codes and building permits.
  • Preparing and issuing building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits and certificates of occupancy.
  • Reviewing and approving permit applications.
  • Determine fees for building, re-roofing/siding, mechanical, plumbing and electrical permits.
  • Serve as account technician and cashier for the division to include receiving, processing and depositing payments for permits and related fees.
  • Maintain balance reports.
  • Respond to inquiries from various officials, agencies and the general public regarding building codes and permits.
  • Research issues related to building codes, permits and inspections. Enter data and prepare a variety of records and reports.
  • Maintain a supply of office supplies and forms.
  • Perform a variety of technical and administrative duties to include the use of computerized data entry equipment and various word processing, spreadsheet and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information.
  • Summarize data in standardized permit reports, including semi-annual and annual reports.
  • The ability to use a computer and associated software such as Microsoft suite products and other software programs.
  • Ensure adherence to division policy and procedures.

Minimal Qualifications :
  • High School Diploma or GEDand
  • 1 year of work-related experience in an administrative or customer facing role.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
  • Background in construction or development and working knowledge of permit process
  • High attention to detail when proofreading/correcting written reports
  • Establish rapport and interact professionally in order to maintain and foster harmonious working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, and creativity in response to changing situations and needs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Data stewardship of regulatory requirements and industry best practices
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite
  • Detail-oriented and consistent
