Position Summary Under the general direction of the Senior AVP, and the Medical Director, or Director of Psychological Services or Director of Clinical Operations, the Psychiatrist performs highly complex psychiatric services following a short-term model. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: provide outpatient psychiatric evaluations and short-term treatment to students; communicate with students regarding psychiatric care; communicate and collaborate with community providers to coordinate care; refer patients requiring long-term treatment or treatment outside the scope of care on a college campus to suitable community referrals; provide consultation to Student Health medical providers that are treating psychiatric patients; collaborate and provide consultation with Psychological Services providers and case manager and, manage psychiatric emergencies on campus by direct intervention or by collaborating with Student Health, Counseling, and Wellness providers and campus personnel, as appropriate.

Department Information At Student Health, Counseling, and Wellness Services (SHCWS), we support all aspects of student wellness to improve overall health and promote lifetime wellness through collaboration, education, and innovation. Our integrated approach to healthcare goes beyond treating illnesses. Our team of health and wellness professionals work collaboratively to ensure our students have access to top quality care that supports their physical, mental, emotional, and basic needs. SHCWS is accredited through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities :
Thorough knowledge of and the ability to effectively and efficiently apply the principles and methods essential to the diagnosis and treatment of medical and/or mental health disorders within the scope of the assigned specialty; understanding of community resources for referral of medical and/or mental health care and treatment in the specialty beyond the scope of the Student Health, Counseling and Wellness Services. Knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and the assigned specialty. Thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics standards and patient privacy; ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for Student Health, Counseling and Wellness Services personnel; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners, therapists, nursing, and specialists, as well as students, administrators, staff and faculty.
Experience and Education:
Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties.
License and Certification Requirements:
Physicians - Specialty Services must possess* and maintain:
- A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
- Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or sub-specialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties.
- A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
- Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) (ACLS) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.
*Note: In accordance with Executive Order 943 a physician can be given clinical privileges pending initial certification, but must be board certified as soon as possible, but no later than two years after the date of hire.
Required Qualifications Knowledge and interest in working with college students. Medical Degree (MD OR DO). Board certified in Psychiatry. Licensed to practice medicine in the State of California in good standing. Completion of a psychiatric residency. Possess current DEA (Drug Enforcement) certificate. Experience using an EHR (Electronic Health Record System). Sensitivity to diversity and multi-cultural issues. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with University students. Ability to work and communicate in a positive and cooperative manner on a multi-disciplinary team. Ability to handle difficult, sensitive and confidential situations tactfully. Good written and oral communication skills. Experience in administering an outpatient psychiatry service. Experience providing training to multi-disciplinary Providers. Experience in consulting licensed clinical staff. Recent experience (within last two years) working with an outpatient setting in Psychiatry. Excellent clinical skills and knowledge in the areas of psychiatry described in the job duties, including evaluation and treatment.
