    Description

    Under moderate supervision, operates, adjusts, and maintains large-scale offset single and multicolor printing presses and multiple digital printing presses to assist marketing and communications in providing Metro printed information for the general public.

    Examples of Duties

    • Reviews job tickets, determines what is needed for each job, and ensures that equipment required is in good repair
    • Sets up, adjusts, and operates large multicolor and digital presses and web presses to reproduce forms, marketing materials, charts, graphs, reports, and other materials
    • Mixes ink to match color and ensure proper consistency for printing on various types of paper
    • Adjusts presses to proper paper size, thickness, and impression counts
    • Prepares, replaces, and adjusts chemicals, solutions, inks, and mechanical parts for proper printing quality
    • Checks materials reproduced for clarity and intensity of impressions
    • Reviews work for quality, completeness and accuracy; makes mechanical corrections, as necessary, to ensure customer satisfaction
    • Cleans, adjusts, and maintains multi-color offset presses and single and multi-color digital presses; conducts minor equipment repair
    • May oversee and coordinate the work of employees on an assigned shift in the absence of the supervisor
    • Ensures work area is free from obstructions
    • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

    Minimum Qualifications

    A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.

    • Four years of relevant experience operating large four-color and digital presses and four-unit web presses
    Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements
    • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required


    Essential Knowledge

    Knowledge of (defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)
    • Function and operation of large-scale, offset multicolor presses, digital presses and platemakers
    • Paper stock, film, inks, and chemicals used in reproduction work
    • Care and preparation of metal plates
    • Mechanical principles
    • Basic math
    • Applicable business software applications
    • Safety rules for print shops

    Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)
    • Operating, adjusting, and maintaining large-scale offset single and multicolor presses, and digital presses
    • Proofreading work, identifying errors and problems
    • Mixing and matching printing inks to a proof and discerning differences in colors, shades, intensities, and viscosities
    • Communicating effectively with others
    • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
    • Computerized print equipment

    Ability to (defined as a present competence to perform an observable behavior or produce an observable result)
    • Use various applicable tools and appropriate chemicals
    • Use math to calculate material needs
    • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on various printing presses
    • Follow instructions
    • Move objects weighing up to 75 pounds
    • Plan and complete work according to established priorities
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English
