    Position Duties

    The Environmental Services Department (ESD) is recruiting to fill an Air Conditioning Mechanic position. These positions will be located at San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF) at 700 Los Esteros Road, San Jose, CA 95134. The typical schedule consists of daytime shifts, Monday through Friday, and may infrequently be required to work nights or weekends if needed.

    The Air Conditioning Mechanics work in a small team setting and are responsible for, but not limited to, installing, operating, inspecting, adjusting, repairing, replacing, troubleshooting, maintaining and performing preventative maintenance of heating, ventilating, cooling, air-conditioning, and ventilating equipment and controls and axillary equipment.

    Other typical responsibilities include:
    • Repairing packaged A/C units, furnaces, combination units, heating units, and ventilating fans; repairing and adjusting to associated equipment such as compressors, pumps, ventilating fans, burners, and air conditioning control systems
    • Checking v-belts, lubricating fan bearings, replacing air filters and purified media on air handlers
    • Cleaning condenser coils, checking all operational and safety controls, checking suction and discharges pressure, checking for refrigerant leaks, silver solders or silver brazes all breaks, evacuates, and recharges system on air conditioning and condensing units.
    • Recording all maintenance activities through work orders utilizing a Computer Maintenance Management System daily.

    The Air Condition Mechanics may also interpret operating conditions through the use of a Building Management System, determine system abilities and conditions, and make the proper adjustments to insure correct operating parameters for all equipment. They may also prepare various reports, such as Daily Activity Reports which includes Corrective Maintenance and Facilities Improvement and Modification.

    The successful candidate will have experience with the installation, operation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of a wide variety of pumping, heating, refrigeration, ventilating and cooling systems and related equipment normally found in larger offices of public buildings.

    The Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF) is an advanced treatment facility equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory for processing samples and conducting tests related to the water treatment process. The Air Conditioning Department supports the laboratory in its day-to-day operations. An Air Conditioning Mechanic at the RWF is responsible for servicing and troubleshooting laboratory exhaust hoods and specialized refrigeration chambers as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    (These qualifications are typically required. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be substituted.)

    Education and Experience

    Completion of certificate program in HVAC from an accredited college or university AND three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and cooling systems which are common to large buildings.

    Required Licensing (such as driver’s license, certifications, etc.)
    • Possession of a valid State of California driver's license.
    • Possession of a Universal Certification for Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Refrigerants from the Environmental Protection Agency.
    • As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required.

    Computer Skills - Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.

    Flexibility - Makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes, performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment.

    Communication Skills - Communicates and listens effectively and responds in an timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate, complete, current; well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form responds to statements and comments of others in a way that reflects understanding of the content and the accompanying emotion; asks clarifying questions to assure understanding of what the speaker intended, ensures consistent communication takes place within area of responsibility.

    Selection Process:
