CAREER DESCRIPTIONSENIOR IT NETWORK ENGINEER In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive a salary range increase on the following date:
Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase
Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

RECRUITMENT/POSITION INFORMATION This recruitment is being held to establish an Open Eligible List to fill current vacancies in this class until the next recruitment. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.
THE DIVISION The Sheriff-Coroner/Technology Division consists of approximately 150 personnel organized in six areas that specialize in specific operational and technical units, including Administration/Operations, Special Projects, Radio Communications, Applications, Infrastructure, and Security. Each section maintains a staff of Managers, Engineers, Technicians, and support staff to provide a high level of operational and technical expertise to various public safety functions including Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services, Lifeguard, Park Rangers, Public Works, Local Government, Courts, County and City jails, and Probation facilities. The Division provides centralized countywide coordinated communications systems for all local public safety agencies; installation and maintenance of communications and electronic equipment (microwave equipment, 9-1-1 dispatch equipment, mobile and portable radios, closed circuit television, surveillance, security electronic systems within the jail system, sound and video systems); operational and maintenance support to the coordinated communications systems; engineering and frequency management; and serves as the central coordinator/program manager for the operation and maintenance of the 800 MHz Countywide Coordinated Communications System (CCCS) and 900 MHz paging system. The Division is also responsible for all Information Technology operations across the entire Sheriff's Department. This includes application development and support, help desk support, desktop support, mobile and MDC support, storage and server support, network and CCTV support, and network security operations.
THE OPPORTUNITYThe Sr. IT Network Engineer, under general direction, will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and training of others on the daily support of the Orange County Sheriff Department's data and network infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to the design, installation, implementation and documentation of LAN, WAN, and WLAN equipment, routers, switches, network appliances, VPN's, firewalls, and VOIP telecommunication systems. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring acceptable uptime and performance of the network infrastructure, will plan performance improvements and ensure the prevention of security risks/threats. The Sr. IT Network Engineer will be monitoring the health, stability and operability of a high-performance data center network, a high-performance wireless infrastructure, and wide area network spanning across various locations.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in computer science or in a related field and have 3-5 years of experience working with high performance platforms, troubleshooting and reporting of systems, and managing/maintaining/designing application network infrastructures.

- Switch ACL, VLAN, vPC configuration
- Microsoft Windows Server and Linux
- VMWare VSphere distributed virtual switching
- Centralized monitoring of network performance
- Change/patch management of network infrastructure
- Network design documentation and standardization
Project Management:- Experienced in leading team projects and managing projects to completion
- Experienced in planning, organizing and instituting timelines at each step in order to meet overall goals
- Understands the importance of staying within the parameters of budget and policy
- Experienced in supporting computing security audits
Interpersonal & Analytical Skills:- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communication to technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to analyze problems, propose/strategize designs and implement solutions
- Ability to recognize within project scopes and provide remediation strategies to resolve issues
License/Certifications:- Network certifications desirable
- Computing security certification are highly desirable

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.
Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts).

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment but occasionally requires travel to other locations. Work environments may include high levels of noise, dust and/or unpleasant odors. Occasional early morning, evening, holiday and/or weekend work may be required.
