Vacation & Sick Leave At the City of Buckeye, we understand the vital role that vacation time plays in supporting the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our employees. Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally,
employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service). Holidays The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
Retirement This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.27%, per fiscal year.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesGENERAL PURPOSE: Performs skilled and semi-skilled work associated with streetlight operation, repair, and maintenance duties.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties

- Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains streetlights including lamp, photocell, ballast, fuses and related devices. Rewires light poles, locates power sources to streetlights and installs streetlight wiring systems.
- Repairs and maintains traffic signals and poles as needed.
- Responds to emergencies, after-hours calls, outages, and system failures as required.
- Maintains inventory, installation, maintenance, repair, replacement records, and related work order records.
- Coordinates repairs with other City departments to ensure proper traffic control and other safety measures.
- Monitors City streets to identify downed poles, inoperative lights, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention; initiates corrective action.
- Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, power and hand tools related to this position. Performs general maintenance and cleaning on equipment, machinery and tools. Keeps inventory of tools, materials and supplies. Ensures adequate inventory of materials.
- Performs a variety of preventative maintenance including changing signal bulbs, cleaning reflectors and refractors, and painting poles.
- Interacts with local electric utility company representatives regarding streetlight repair and maintenance.
- Identifies, locates and marks underground electrical utilities in accordance with “Arizona Blue Stake” requirements.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications & Position RequirementsEducation and Experience:High school diploma or GED and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience maintaining, installing and/or repairing streetlights or five (5) years of equivalent electrical experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; OR an equivalent combination of education and streetlight and electrical experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of:- Methods, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of streetlights and traffic signal equipment.
- Electricity and electrical systems common to traffic control devices.
- Hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in working with electricity and near underground utility lines.
- Blue stake laws.
- Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment option.
- Basic traffic control/barricade procedures
Skill in:- Operation of various types of construction and maintenance equipment.
- Performing electrical wiring and streetlight and traffic signal maintenance.
- Experience with asset management programs, Cartegraph preferred.
Ability to: - Perform general math calculations.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work from plans and drawings.
- Carry out an effective preventive maintenance program.
- Work independently, as well as in a team environment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees and the public.
12-Month Goals:- Obtain CDL Class B with all appropriate endorsements.
- Obtain IMSA Roadway Lighting Technician I certification.
- Obtain ATTSA or IMSA Traffic Control Technician certification.
- Complete NIMS IS-100 & IS-700 training.
Additional InformationSpecial Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License Class B (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) within one (1) year of hire. International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Roadway Lighting Technician I certification is required; however, additional electrical experience may substitute for the IMSA at time of hire in which case the IMSA certification is required within six months of hire. Ability to obtain valid IMSA or ATSSA Workzone, Roadway Lighting and Level I Traffic Signal certification within one year from date of hire.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Requires frequent heavy lifting and pulling of cable; working from heights, near high voltage, in traffic areas and inclement weather.
