    Integrated Waste Management Division (IWM):

    The Integrated Waste Management (IWM) Division leads one of the largest and most advanced solid waste management systems in the United States through creativity and innovation. Division staff collaborate with other City departments and establish strong partnerships with private companies, other government agencies, nonprofits, and the community on a variety of key efforts. This position is part of the Public Litter Can (PLC) program that manages public-facing litter cans adjacent to litter-generating commercial properties. Work with a great team and learn new skills that contribute to the bigger purpose of protecting the environment at a local level.

    Position Duties

    The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Maintenance Worker I vacancy in the Integrated Waste Management (IWM) Division.

    The salary range for this classification is: $68,473.60 - $83,304.00.

    The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    This is a temporary (Overstrength) position that is anticipated to be funded through June 30, 2025, subject to further extension as appropriate. This position is proposed to be added as a permanent position beginning in the Fiscal Year 2025-2026. If this position is not extended or added as a permanent position through the budget process, the City may seek to place you in other internal job opportunities based on your previous work experience.

    Maintenance Worker I responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    Communication with the public, vendors, and PLC stakeholders
    • Interacting with the public through receiving, reviewing, and replying to requests for new installations and maintenance of Public Litter Cans.
    • Purchasing of PLC equipment for new installs and repairs.
    • Communicating with PLC equipment vendors for purchasing of new PLCs.
    • Working with other City departments or PLC stakeholders to discuss various aspects of PLC program needs.
    • Other communication needs related to the PLC program.

    Public litter Can Maintenance
    • Cleaning and removal of graffiti on PLCs.
    • Painting PLCs by sprayer or rolling.
    • Repairing door locks, hinges, lids, and other general repair needs.
    • Picking-up litter and illegal dumping around perimeter of PLCs.
    • Scheduling removal of biowaste by independent contractors.
    • Grasping, reaching, bending, pulling, kneeling, crouching, squatting, lifting/carrying objects heavier than 50 pounds.
    • Intermittent standing and walking are performed.
    • Other PLC maintenance needs related to the PLC program.

    Use of vehicles, equipment, and power tools to maintain and repair PLCs
    • Using power tools and hand tools to install and remove PLCs.
    • Using hand tools to remove damaged PLCs and PLC liners.
    • Operating power saws, hammer drills, surface grinders, pressure washers, generators, paint sprayers, and other power and hand tools.
    • Problem-solve difficulties related to removing damaged PLCs anchored into sidewalk, burnt interior PLC liners that have melted and damaged PLCs and concrete surface.
    • PLC repair in tight PLC space, such as removing and installing PLC parts that are hard to reach, like hinges and interior lid bolts.
    • Understanding of general equipment safety and traffic safety practices.
    • Driving City-provided vehicle to transport, install, and maintain PLCs.

    Use of computers to track program performance and PLC locations
    • Draft and update Word and Excel documents for program tracking and procedures.
    • Use Outlook, Zoom, Teams, or similar software to communicate with City, public, and other stakeholders.
    • Update Geographic Information System (GIS) maps to track PLC placement, issues, and data.

    Desirable skills
    • Experience leading or supervising staff in equipment installation and maintenance.
    • Additional years of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, parks, or public facilities.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Educational Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency certificate).

    Experience: One (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, parks, or public facilities.

    Required Licensing: Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California

    Reliability : Completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.

    Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills : Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Communication Skills : Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills; displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.
