    The Position

    The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is accepting applications for the position of ENGINEERING AIDE to fill one (1) vacancy in the Energy Delivery Division at One Stop Shop. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

    The Engineering Aide performs para-professional office and field engineering work. Depending upon level and assignment, work includes drafting; field; survey; project design, calculations, and layout; contract administration; inspection; engineering related computer aided technology and applications.

    Additionally, under general supervision, the ideal will calculate and notify customers of required fees and charges (bonds, streetlight fees), monitor payment and status of customer projects (permits, clearances, work progress), spot single-phase residential meters to meet standard utility required clearances and Spot commercial meters and switchgear based on standard utility requirements.

    Work Performed

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Depending on area of assignment, perform and deliver a wide range of customer and engineering services and aide for the City and its Engineers and Engineering Technicians; perform routine, general, and less complex work under direct supervision for multiple departments and projects.
    • Create, design, and draft base map for infrastructure upgrades; use and operates various computer equipment, software, and hardware to create competent designs and make modifications to existing designs.
    • Perform field survey and measurement work to ensure accuracy in drawings and calculations; gather, compile, and organize various actual measurements for locations of vaults, manholes, transformers, etc. for future engineering designs and construction plans.
    • Perform construction observation to document and memorialize Capital Improvement Projects and ensure compliance with construction specifications and plans.
    • Assist, support, and engage with other engineers to complete required drawings and designs; provide clerical and general support for various tasks and engineering related work; attend consistent meetings and engage with Engineering staff to ensure work is being done accurately and effectively.
    • Plot and issues drawings to be given to construction crews and inspection crews; coordinate work and delivery of documents and ensures all parties involve have access to drawings and sketches; edit, review, and update documents and drawings as needed; ensure all revisions and modifications are communicated.
    • Calculate and determine the quantity of materials being used in a project for central stores to accommodate the project needs; determine necessary equipment, develop cost estimates, and calculated usage to ensure facilities are not over extended or overworked.
    • Respond to emails, calls, and general questions and inquiries from a variety of customers and construction personnel.
    • Process, submit, and track engineering paperwork for the department and the City; provide technical support for engineering related tasks; perform work in changing areas of assignment.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications

    Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).

    Experience: One year of experience in the planning, design and/or engineering phases of (depending upon assignment) streets, sewers, storm drains; or electric/water facilities.

    Highly Desired Qualifications:
    • Experience helping customers over the counter, on the phone and responding to emails related to customer projects and utility service requirements.
    • Experience coordinating closely with developers, business owners, contractors during the Building plan-check phase to determine utility equipment location, service fees, tracking permits, and setting timelines to meet the customer's desired electric in-service date.
    • Experience performing routine electric utility plans and specifications, designs, estimates, fielding and inspecting existing meter panels.
    • Experience performing routine computations utilizing AutoCAD software.
    • Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) Degree/Certificate from an accredited college/university.
    • Completion of trigonometry or higher math courses.
    • Experience updating asset data and work order status utilizing Work Management Database


    Licenses and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid Class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

    Service Employees International Union (SEIU) - General Unit

    The City offers an attractive benefits package, the central provisions of which are as follows:

    • Retirement for Classic Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3-year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 8%. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
    • Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost and is subject to change per CalPERS every fiscal year. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
    • Health Insurance - The City offers six health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,537 per month for HMO plans (family coverage).
    • Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $45 per month.
    • Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
    • Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insurance equal to $100,000. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employees and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
    • Deferred Compensation - The City contributes $25 a month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation in the deferred compensation plan is optional.
    • Leave Benefits - Includes vacation leave, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits. Please refer to the SEIU MOU for specific details.
    • Flexible Spending Account - The City offers a Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
    • State Disability Insurance - Automatic coverage administered by the Employee Development Department (EDD) of the State of California
    • Vacation Accrual - 0-4 yrs. = 80hrs, 5-9 yrs. = 120hrs, 10+ yrs. = 160 hrs.
