    Examples of Duties

    Extra-Help employees are not entitled to County benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours per week.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Assist in the examination of fields, roadways, and cultivated areas to determine occasion and extent of infestation of weeds, birds, insects or predators, and for the presence or extent of plant disease infestation and assists in their eradication or control.
    • Places, maintains, and services various types of pest detection devices within the County.
    • Assist in the inspection of fields and orchards for the presence of and control of plant pests and diseases.
    • Keep records of inspections and prepares reports.
    • Mix, load and apply herbicides and rodent baits.
    • Prepare rodenticide baits to be used and sold to the public.
    • Assist in the inspection of produce for compliance with quality standards.
    • Assist with the control and eradication of noxious weeds and other pests.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    Equivalent to graduation from high school.

    License:
    Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.

    Essential Functions

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Communicate effectively with others in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
    • Conduct field inspections and activities on uneven surfaces under various environmental conditions.
    • Repetitive motion, sitting for long periods, walking.
    • Frequent lifting and carrying of 5 to 50 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 75 pounds unassisted.
    • Occasional standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, climbing.
    • Constant good overall vision and reading and close-up work.
    • Frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination.
    • Occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision.
    • Normal dexterity with frequent writing.
    • Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person.
    • Frequent decision making, concentration, and public contact.
    • Some assignments may require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime.
    • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions including heat/cold, dust, chemical residues, allergens, or odors.
    • Occasional exposure to indoor industrial conditions including heat/cold, odors, or poor ventilation.

    • Regular attendance is an essential function.

    Knowledge of:
    • Types of crops grown and farm methods practiced in Merced County.
    • Various types of pesticides and proper applications.

    Ability to:
    • Work cooperatively with growers and residents to enforce the law tactfully and effectively.
    • Keep records and prepare reports.
    • Lift and carry.
    • Identify plant pests and diseases.


    FAMILY CARE LEAVE

    Family Care Leave applies to all employees who work 1250 or more hours in any twelve month period.

    HEALTH PLANS AND LIFE INSURANCE

    Extra-help employees are not entitled to County-paid medical, dental, vision, life insurance, Employee Assistance Program benefits and are not eligible to participate in the Deferred Compensation Plan.

    JURY DUTY

    Extra-help employees are not entitled to pay or receive reimbursement from the County for Jury Duty.

    PAID TIME BENEFITS

    Extra-help employees are not entitled to paid bereavement,vacation, or holidays.

    PAID SICK LEAVE
    Extra-help employees are entitled to accrue up to five (5) paid sick days (40 hours) in a 12-month period.

    SOCIAL SECURITY

    Extra-helpemploymentearningsare not covered under Social Security. Merced County provides an alternate plan - Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) - for extra-help employees who are otherwise not eligible for participation in the County'sretirement system.

    COMPENSATION/UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE:

    The County does provide benefits to those eligible under the State Workers Compensation and Unemployment Insurance statutes.
