    Under the supervision of the Fire Assistant Chief, the Senior Fire Protection Engineer

    performs the following duties:

    • Supervises employees engaged in the fire and life safety review of site plans, building plans and inspections.
    • Assigns work and evaluates personnel, prepares budget, evaluates proposed legislative amendments, enforcement methods and test procedures.
    • Participates in personnel interviews. Prepares administrative reports and procedural memos.
    • Consults with elected officials and staff. Maintains a direct liaison with other City departments, and interacts directly with Department heads and section heads.
    • Testifies before committees and legislative bodies.
    • Meets with or delivers presentations to State and City legislative bodies, homeowners' groups, fire and professional engineering associations, and building industry associations.
    • Evaluates, recommends, and determines the approval or denial of administrative variances to local and State fire regulations.
    • Interprets the Fire Code, California Code of Regulations Title 19 and 24,
    • California Building Code, and adopted standards.
    • Conducts, evaluates, or supervises technical training in code enforcement requirements, design trends, new construction methods, departmental policies and regulations, and new fire protection products and devices.

    Emergency Appointment

    An emergency appointment is not a regular appointment. It is a temporary appointment which does not require that you successfully compete in the Civil Service examination process. The appointment may not exceed one year and must be terminated immediately when a regular appointment can be made from an eligible list. No emergency appointment can exceed one year. (City Charter Section 1013).
