    Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) has one vacancy for a full -time permanent Library Assistant I in the Carmel Valley Library.

    Department Summary
    Monterey County Free Libraries is a public library system whose mission is to bring ideas, inspiration, information, and enjoyment to the community. Monterey County Free Libraries operates seventeen branch libraries, three bookmobiles, a library-by-mail program, deposit collections in local schools, and several special programs, including a literacy program which operates a literacy outreach vehicle focused on family literacy and kindergarten readiness. Free library services are provided to all residents of Monterey County. Additional or enhanced services are provided through funding from the Foundation for the Monterey County Free Libraries. These enhanced services include adult literacy tutoring, after school homework assistance, enhanced library book and material purchasing, technology services for public use and public access to internet, and youth services program support for library staff training and for direct public service.

    Position Summary
    This is the entry level class in the Library Assistant series. The current vacancy is at the Carmel Valley Branch. Employees in this class receive on-the-job training and assignments are generally limited in scope and normally performed within a procedural framework established by higher level employees. Library Assistant I is generally distinguished from the next higher class of Library Assistant II by the latter class' performance of technical paraprofessional library duties in a large branch library or at County Library Administrative Offices, or the operation of a small, one-person branch library. Library Assistant I incumbents are typically assigned to one of the following: Performance of basic level paraprofessional library duties in a branch library, Performance of basic level paraprofessional support work at the County Library Administrative Offices or Assists and supervises students in the homework center

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used County-wide to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

    This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.

    Examples of Duties

    Examples of Duties
    • Checks library materials in and out through the Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS); performs other circulation duties as required
    • Assists patrons in location of library materials using the ILS and other means; assists in the physical location of materials in the branch or in securing the materials through system hold or inter-library loan
    • Explains library policies and services to the public
    • Possesses a good general knowledge of library resources including books, downloadable media and databases and is able to refer patrons to these resources.
    • Answers simple directional and reference questions, referring more difficult questions to higher level staff
    • Assists with library programs and class visits
    • Sorts and shelves materials, maintaining proper shelf order
    • Keeps library records and prepares simple reports and lists
    • Supports Youth Services programming
    • Supports and implements library programs and community outreach
    • Assists in the planning and implementation of supporting summer reading programs and/or Homework Center activities
    • Sets up and maintains library displays & public bulletin boards
      When assigned to a Homework Center, tasks include:
    • Interacts effectively with groups of students and their caregivers
    • Oversees Control the behaviors of students in the Homework Center

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
    Some knowledge of:
    • Public libraries including general purposes, routines, procedures, and services
    • Quality customer service
    • Computers and software
    Skill and ability to:
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and deliver quality public library service to patrons

    Learn and perform routine library tasks including (but not limited to):

    a. Organizing materials in alphabetical, numerical, or chronological order

    b. Checking out and checking in library materials

    c. Keeping accurate records

    Homework Center:

    a. Assist students with their homework in a variety of subjects

    b. Interacts effectively with groups of students and their caregivers

    c. Oversee behaviors of students in the Homework Center
    • Operate a personal computer with standard software, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and learn specialized library software systems such as Koha and Envisionware
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

    Examples of Experience/Education/Training:

    Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    General Positions:
    Approximately 1 year of experience performing duties equivalent to those of a Library Page for a library or approximately one year of experience in public contact and clerical work involving computer use.

    AND/OR
    Education
    Graduation from high school. Clerical training at a community college or adult school, or classes in library technology at a university or community college.

    Homework Center Coordinator Positions:
    The Experience and Education required for general positions also applies to Homework Center Coordinators (HCC). For HCC positions, the combination of experience, education and/or training should include a minimum of 6 months teaching or tutoring groups of students.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
    • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
