    The Team...

    The Human Resources Division is supported by a staff of 20, and has an annual budget of $5.4 million. The Division is dedicated to exceptional service, innovation, and operational excellence that leads to attracting, engaging, and retaining a diversified and highly qualified workforce.     This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week, up to 29 hours a week, for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    The Role...

    Under the direction of the Manager of Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S), the Administrative Intern will gain valuable hands-on experience in various aspects of the EH&S functions. This internship offers an opportunity to apply academic theories, ideas and practices on a variety of day-to-day EH&S assignments and operations.

    How you get to contribute:
    • Assists in developing, implementing, coordinating, and administering a comprehensive environmental, health and safety management program for the Port, including industrial safety, occupational health and safety, hazardous materials and hazard abatement, and accident prevention programs, to ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations for employee occupational health and safety.
    • Assists with the coordination of a variety of training classes and programs to ensure employee compliance with Port safety measures, including confined space, air monitoring, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, construction and work zone traffic safety, fall protection, alcohol and drug awareness, lifting techniques, CPR and first aid, hearing protection, hazard communications, hazardous waste operations, and emergency response and others; tracks dates and schedules required annual retraining classes.
    • Assists special and periodic environmental, health and safety inspections of Port facilities and operations to identify safety and environmental hazards.
    • Assist with drafting EH&S policies, correspondence, forms, and guidance.
    • Assist with the review of work specifications for environmental, health and safety regulations and codes; enforces Port safety and health policies and procedures.
    • Utilize Microsoft Visio to process map operational processes.
    • Assist in development of comprehensive metrics and create dashboards that track progress on outcome-based goals and ensure desired objectives are achieved.
    • Assist in management of the learning management system (LMS) (setting up courses, monitoring enrollment and registration, analyzing and reporting participation trends, etc.)
    • Assist with routine job safety analyses of facilities, equipment, work areas and work practices and prepares reports of findings and recommendations.
    • Assist with industrial hygiene and noise monitoring of specific work sites and locations.
    • Assist with ergonomic evaluations of employee work stations and processes.
    • Assist with periodic special inspections and investigations, including noise level analyses, indoor air quality, and others; follows up to ensure action on safety and other abatement notices.
    • Assists with responses to the scene of employee personal injury accidents and environmental-related incidents and conducts accident/incident investigations; analyzes details, devise effective countermeasures, and prepares detailed reports of findings and recommended remedial actions; prepares incident documentation and necessary reporting.
    • Maintains department records for federal and state occupational health and safety regulatory compliance.
    • Periodically checks the operation of, monitors, and calibrates safety equipment to ensure conformance with Port standards in use.
    • Conduct research on industry best practices, analyze data, and present findings.
    • Participate in activities to increase and enhance equity-minded practices within the Port.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    What we are looking for:

    Open to current students in an accredited college or university with at least junior standing, or completion of a bachelor's degree in the last 12 months enrolled in graduate level courses in the fields of occupational health studies, environmental studies, industrial health studies, safety management, safety technology, or a closely related field with a 2.0 GPA or higher.Must be able to arrange reliable transportation to and from worksite and/or offsite appointments and training.

    • Course work focused on environmental health and safety management.
    • Basic knowledge of EH&S terminology.
    • Ability to develop an understanding and practical approach to EH&S management.
    • Proficient in MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
    • Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as independently.
    • Strong work ethic and attendance record.
    • Ability to adapt to new situations.
    • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise.
    • Ability to work at least 20-29 hours per week during regular M-F, 7am-4pm work schedule.

    SPECIAL NOTE This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time. In such an event, the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach. This position does not participate in the hybrid work schedule, as it provides internal services along with the other staff in Environmental, Health & Safety Bureau.
