    DESCRIPTION

    The Library, Arts and Culture Department has 3 (three) openings for an unclassified, part-time, Learning Guides (LIBRARY AIDE NON-CAREER) for the Family Learning Centers (FLC) Program. Family Learning Centers offer drop-in homework help, homework support materials, and computer-based learning to enrich student study skills and develop parent participation and support. Under the direction of a supervising Librarian, Learning Guides contribute to making libraries across the City a welcoming environment while providing educational enrichment. The incumbents will work out of one of the Branch library locations or the Main Library.

    Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. The incumbent in this position will typically work 18 to 24 hours per week.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Assist students with homework assignments and improving educational skills
    • Assist patrons with job search skills and resume preparation
    • Respond to general library inquiries regarding resources and services
    • Assist patrons with the use of public computers and devices
    • Assist with preparation and maintenance of program paperwork, data entry, monthly reports and statistics, as required
    • Maintain discipline and good behavior in the library, particularly within the FLC
    • Prepare for, assist with, and attend mandatory training sessions for Learning Guides
    • File, sort and shelve books and other library materials in the FLC
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    • Experience equivalent to six months of full-time clerical experience involving significant amounts of alphabetical and numerical filings;
    • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, follow both verbal and written directions, and to type 20 net words per minute;
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and maneuver book trucks;
    • Willingness to work part-time and irregular schedules, including evenings and weekends;
    • A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.
    DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • A high school diploma;
    • One year of library experience;
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE
    • Organization skills, meticulous with details, and ability to complete paperwork accurately and consistently;
    • Knowledge of Kindergarten through Grade 12 curriculum in the Long Beach Unified School District;
    • Strong writing, math, reading, and science skills;
    • Strong computer skills (Internet, MS Office, databases) and the ability to learn library related technology;
    • Ability to exercise professionalism by combining tact, patience, and a personable demeanor.
