WHAT DOES AN OPERATING SYSTEMS ANALYST DO? Under supervision, supports complex operating systems and associated software and hardware on midrange servers or mainframes hosting critical applications in a high-availability environment. These environments require formal change management and problem resolution procedures, highly fault tolerant configurations, and comprehensive back-up and recovery solutions.

Essential Job FunctionsInstalls, configures, maintains, and upgrades operating systems.
Establishes connectivity to and configures peripherals.
Installs, services, and moves servers, networking devices, storage devices, and related equipment.
Allocates and organizes data storage under supervision.
Configures system interfaces, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Develops and maintains system documentation.
Performs system back-up and restore operations.
Assists in implementing, maintaining, and testing disaster recovery solutions.
Works with vendors to develop and implement solutions to specific problems or to meet specific objectives, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Analyzes and reports system utilization and performance data and, under direction, makes configuration changes to achieve agreed upon service levels.
Installs, configures, and maintains server or mainframe-based communications services, database management software, compilers, and storage management solutions, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Evaluates, tests, and implements vendor-provided patches and upgrades as directed, in accordance with change management procedures.
Conducts performance analysis.
Participates in the evaluation of system tools, utilities, and solutions.
Maintains system security as described in policies and procedures.
Customizes operating system code and generates the operating system, under the direction of a more senior staff member.
Maintains an understanding of evolving industry trends and technologies.
Requirements REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY Option I: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Information Systems , Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or Software Engineering and two (2) years of full-time*, paid experience within the last five (5) years at the level of Application Developer II**. One (1) year of the required experience must include the configuration and maintenance of complex systems***, which involves configuring and implementing releases, upgrades, or changes to operating systems, servers, and related software.
Option II: Two (2) years of full-time, paid experience within the last five (5) years configuring and maintaining complex systems***, including configuring, coordinating, and implementing releases, upgrades, or changes to operating systems, servers, and related software. One (1) year of the required experience must be in a midrange or mainframe environment with formal change management, problem resolution procedures, and back-up and recovery plans.
PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
LICENSE: A valid California Class “C” Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

* Full-time experience is evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 40-hour work week.
**Experience at the level of Los Angeles County class of Application Developer II is defined as: Under general supervision, analyzes, designs, evaluates, develops, codes, tests, and maintains application systems.
*** Complex Systems is defined as a system architecture with many components and applications which may interact with each other. Relation between data systems and system consolidation and interoperability.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Additional credit will be given to applicants that possess the following desirable qualifications: - Additional experience in the configuration and maintenance of complex systems***, which involves configuring and implementing releases, upgrades, or changes to operating systems, servers, and related software in excess of the selection requirement.
- Additional experience in a midrange or mainframe environment with formal change management, problem resolution procedures, and back-up and recovery plans in excess of the selection requirement .
Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT: This examination will consist of one part:
An evaluation of your education, experience, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire based on your application information weighted 100%.
The passing score for the assessment is 70%.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION: Applications are processed as they are received and added to the eligible register accordingly.
Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift , including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
