Public Information Officers who plan, prepare, and disseminate information on the activities, services, and objectives of the Sheriff's Department to the news media and the public. Duties include p reparing and updating news releases regarding highly sensitive or confidential matters; a nswering public inquiries on departmental procedures, investigations, or activities in person, by telephone, or in writing; a ssisting in the preparation of reports or informational publications about the Sheriff's Department, including researching, writing, and coordinating the photography, layout, and printing; and o verseeing the daily activities of the Sheriff’s Media Unit.

2) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation. incumbents may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Minimum RequirementsA minimum of
three (3) years of full-time experience performing media relations and public information dissemination for a public sector agency, large organization, or a news media outlet. Qualifying experience must include any of the following:
- Media and Public Information Dissemination: Experience preparing, writing, and editing official communications such as press releases, news stories, newsletters, and informational materials intended for the public and media outlets.
- Event-Based and Field Reporting: Experience conducting live or on-site interviews, gathering information from the field, and reporting events or developments to provide accurate, real-time public updates.
- Outreach Project Coordination: Experience planning and managing public outreach efforts, including coordinating projects and campaigns to inform and engage the community about agency programs, services, and events.
- Content Development for Official Channels: Experience creating and managing informational content for official communication channels and social media platforms, with a focus on factual, timely, and policy-compliant messaging.
Note: Experience focused on managing social media platforms or performing marketing and advertising functions will
not be considered qualifying.
Desired QualificationsThe ideal candidate will have:
- A Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Business/Public Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Mass Communications, or Television/Broadcast Production.
- Professional experience managing or supporting crisis communication efforts.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- The ability to develop high quality press releases quickly and under extreme deadlines.
- Experience working in breaking news situations that includes sensitive and/or controversial media subjects.
- A demonstrated understanding of news media operations.
