    Vacation & Sick Leave

    At the City of Buckeye, we understand the vital role that vacation time plays in supporting the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our employees. Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally, employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service).


    Holidays

    The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

    Retirement
    This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.27%, per fiscal year.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs routine skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work at the Water Resource Department facilities including wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, water treatment sites, PRV stations and well sites. Acts as back-up to the Lead Maintenance Mechanic.

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

    • Maintains large and specialized equipment.
    • Research parts and obtain quotes. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots motors, controls, valves, electrical equipment, compressors and well equipment at the Water Resources Department facilities.
    • Monitors and repairs wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, water well and booster stations; maintains chlorination, chemical and generating equipment.
    • Fabricates, constructs, installs, and repairs equipment and machinery.
    • Operates a variety of trucks and equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
    • Maintains operation and maintenance records and schedules.
    • Completes required daily documentation, logs and reports.
    • Acts as back-up to the Lead Maintenance Mechanic.
    • Performs other duties as required.


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED equivalent and four (4) years in the maintenance and operations of wastewater treatment, collections, water distribution, water treatment and equipment operations experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • City policies and procedures.
    • Principles and practices of water and wastewater treatment distribution and operation.
    • Equipment maintenance and repair methods and materials.
    • Methods, practices, tools, and materials used in maintaining, repairing, or constructing deep well facilities, booster stations, wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery and wastewater lift stations.
    • Hydraulics and pneumatics of systems involving pneumatic tanks, deep wells, air compressors, actuators, wet wells, pumps, lift stations and booster stations.
    • Safety standards and practices.
    • Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation.
    • The principles of record keeping and records management.

    Skill In & Ability to:
    • Safely operate trucks and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
    • Ensure safe practices are followed, including correct use of PPE, and adhering to all safety guidelines per equipment standards.
    • Communicate with internal and external customers regarding routine and non-routine techniques, operations, and general standards.
    • Follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions.
    • Read and interpret maps, technical specifications and operations manuals for vehicles and equipment.
    • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work.

    12-Month Goals

    Water
    Learn and understand the Citywide Mission, Vision, Values, and Water Resource Department Mission and Vision statements.Preventive Maintenance Completion:
    Successfully complete at least 95% of all scheduled mechanical and electrical preventive maintenance (PM) tasks across all assigned facilities to improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.Corrective Maintenance Response Time:
    Reduce average response time for corrective maintenance work orders through improved prioritization, troubleshooting, and communication with operations and supervisors.Inventory & Parts Management:
    Work with the team to build and maintain an accurate inventory of critical spare parts and tools. Ensure that at least 90% of commonly used parts are in stock to minimize delays during repairs.Safety and Compliance:
    Attend and complete all required safety training courses (e.g., Arc Flash, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout) and ensure full compliance with City and OSHA safety standards during maintenance tasks.Cost Tracking and Efficiency:
    Assist in tracking maintenance labor hours and materials used for each work order. Propose at least 2 cost-saving measures related to maintenance practices, vendor use, or parts sourcing.Documentation and Reporting:
    Ensure that 100% of work orders are properly closed out with complete and accurate notes, including labor hours, parts used, and recommendations for follow-up or improvements.Facility Readiness:
    Support efforts to prepare existing and new facilities for regulatory inspections, ensuring equipment is in operable condition and documentation is up to date.Communication and Collaboration:
    Maintain open and professional communication with operators, supervisors, and vendors. Provide regular updates on work progress and notify leads of any issues that may impact operations.Technology Integration:
    Utilize the (SAMS) CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) effectively to receive, track, and close out work orders. Provide feedback to improve system usage and maintenance data quality.Personal Development:
    Set and pursue one professional development goal, such as achieving a certification (e.g., Backflow Tester, Crane Operator) or expanding knowledge in a specific maintenance area.
    Wastewater Learn and understand the Citywide Mission, Vision, Values, and Water Resource Department Mission and Vision statements.
    Learn and understand Water Resource Department standard operating procedures and operations and maintenance (O&M) manuals for equipment the position is responsible for maintaining.
    Learn the Department’s Asset Management System and work order system (SAMS). Evident by entering, updating, and closing out assigned work orders.
    Become familiar with the critical infrastructure at Water Reclamation Facilities and Lift Stations, such as pumps, mixers, and blowers. Demonstrate knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance procedures to the Lead/Supervisor.

    Additional Information

    Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Arizona Driver's License at time of hire. Possess or have the ability to obtain a grade I Water or Wastewater Operator Certification from ADEQ within one year of hire.

    Physical Demands/Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors and in public facilities. Work will require heavy physical exertion including lifting between 25-50 pounds regularly.
