The Position
Library Technicians/Assistants perform duties in support of the operation of libraries that house and provide access to a variety of materials in a variety of formats. Incumbents perform and/or supervise technical, paraprofessional and administrative duties within one or more functional areas of the library including acquisitions; cataloging; circulation; collection maintenance; document delivery/interlibrary loan; government documents; reference, serials and/or metadata, electronic resources, and digital services.
This recruitment is for a Library Technician II position, located in Carson City, Nevada within the Division of Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records (NSLAPR). Positions in this series perform duties in support of the operation of libraries that house and provide access to a variety of materials in a variety of formats. Incumbents perform and/or supervise technical, paraprofessional and administrative duties within one or more functional area of the library. A Library Technician II is distinguished from lower-level Library Technicians/Assistants by greater supervisory and/or managerial responsibilities and diversified paraprofessional duties. Incumbents work under the general direction of a higher-level classified position, librarian, or section head. The incumbent will serve as a Library Technician II in the highly specialized unit, Imaging & Preservation Services program, of the Archives & Records section within NSLAPR, reporting to the Imaging and Preservation Services Manager who reports to the Deputy Administrator. Incumbents will perform specialized technical work such as: Utilizing a variety of specialized digital cameras, computer hardware, and software to capture digital images of records that have long-term business, historical, or cultural value, including but not limited to documents, maps, plans, artwork, photographic prints, slides, negatives, and film. Handles, prepares, and cleans cultural heritage materials following museum and archival conservation best practices to minimize the impact of digitization on fragile or historic materials. Reviews and corrects work product of peers and support staff to verify the integrity of the digital images, ensuring they are complete, clear, and meet state (NRS 378.255) and federal (Code of Federal Regulations 36 CFR 1237 subpart E) requirements for the digitization of permanent government records and cultural heritage materials.
Maintains and applies knowledge of current best practices, trends, technologies, challenges, and opportunities in the field. Incumbents are responsible for recommending and implementing unit procedures and policies. Act as the assistant to a section head in the daily operation of the program. Work closely with professional staff in the daily operation of the facility, recommend and implement policies and procedures, and supervise classified employees and/or large numbers of temporary workers; oversee numerous and diverse functions such as: perform specialized technical work which requires original thinking, creativity, judgment and analysis in order to develop new and unique solutions to untested, cutting-edge and one-of-a-kind technological problems and projects; oversee and participate in planning, implementing or managing emerging technology projects to include developing testing processes, measuring performance and outcomes, and writing standards, policies and procedures.***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience in a library or other cultural heritage institution, including one year of technical level work performing duties such as copy cataloging, acquisitions, electronic resource management, ; and/or organizing, curating and accessing government publications; OR one year of experience as a Library Technician I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Additional Position Criteria This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. This position requires State and Federal fingerprint-based background checks as a condition of appointment and as condition of continuing employment. This position requires experience with digitization, graphic design, inputting metadata or working with a-typical software. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
