    ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIAN I

    $3,694 - $5,045 per Month

    SUMMARY OF POSITION

    The County of Monterey Health Department’s Animal Services Bureau is seeking one full-time (1.0 FTE) and one part-time (0.5 FTE) permanent Animal Care Technician I (ACT I) to work at our animal shelter located on Hitchcock Road in Salinas. Under immediate supervision, the incumbent receives training to perform the full range of duties in shelter maintenance and animal care. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic and the desire to learn and grow in the position.

    The ACT I’s key responsibilities include the following: receive animals surrendered or impounded in the shelter; identify and maintain records of surrendered/impounded animals; provide daily feeding and care of animals housed within the shelter, including routine exercising of animals; perform daily disinfection and cleaning of animal kennels and cages; maintain clean laundry and dishes (towels, blankets, water, and food bowls, etc.) for use in kennel; and assist with animal adoptions.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used County-wide to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

    This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.

    Examples of Duties

    • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains various animal quarters, accompanying areas, supplies and equipment in a sanitary condition. Washes dishes and laundry.
    • Receives, identifies, checks-in, and maintains records of impounded animals. Places animals in appropriate kenneling areas, quarantines, and transports animals to other facilities. Feeds, cares for, and observes animals, recording and reporting any problems.
    • Conducts general health checks, administers medicine, and vaccinates animals. Provides special care when advised of animals requiring medication, treatment, and/or special needs.
    • Euthanizes, records use of controlled drugs utilized in the euthanasia process, disposes of animals, and maintains records on the disposition of animals.
    • May work with the public and assist in the adoption process.

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

    Some Knowledge of:
    • General care, nutrition, and handling, of a variety of animal breeds and species.
    • Laws, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the impounding, releasing or euthanasia of animals.
    • Cleaning procedures and appropriate cleaning agents, supplies and equipment.

    Skill and Ability to:
    • Learn to properly care for and handle different breeds and species of animals.
    • Learn to follow quarantine and infection control procedures.
    • Exercise good judgment, while working under pressure.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
    • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
    • Provide courteous and excellent customer service.
    • Learn to maintain accurate and legible records.
    • Learn to tolerate the euthanasia of animals.
    • Move and transport animals.

    Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    • Any experience or education in the care and handling of animals.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Obtain a certificate of Euthanasia by Injection, as required by the State of California, within 8 months of appointment to classification.
    • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
    • Work in a facility where there is daily exposure to infectious diseases, parasites, and animal waste.
    • Work in a physically and emotionally demanding environment.
    • Work under adverse conditions, such as inclement weather, and a noisy environment.
    • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
