Definition and Class CharacteristicsUnder general supervision, receives, coordinates, preserves, secures, transports, and releases property/evidence; destroys items no longer scheduled for use as evidence; collects and analyzes certain items of evidence; photographs crime scenes and/or evidence; testifies in court regarding chain of evidence and/or evidence processing; trains staff in the functions of evidence and the automated property tracking system; prepares complex legal paperwork; generates statistics and reports regarding evidence/property; and performs related work as the need arises. This is the journey-level class in the series, fully qualified to independently perform the full range of duties.

Examples of DutiesEssential:- Collects, receives, tags and stores property/evidence from crime scenes
- Research case dispositions and case files to determine the rightful owner of property
- Acquires court orders for the destruction or return of property
- Releases property to victim/suspect when appropriate
- Takes photographs, notes and/or diagrams of evidence at crime scenes
- Testifies in court regarding the chain of evidence
Important:- Enters data on property/evidence into the property system
- Answers telephones and processes requests from victims/suspects
- Types correspondences to victims, suspects and reporting parties in response to requests for the return or destruction of property
- Assists in retrieval of property, accompanying investigators on search warrants or investigations, as needed
Knowledge and Skills RequiredKnowledge of:- Methods and protocols for collecting, storing, processing, and handling property and evidence
- Relevant federal and state laws, as well as court rulings, related to evidence recovery and maintaining the chain of custody
- Procedures for obtaining court orders related to evidence handling
- Guidelines for properly disposing of unneeded evidence, including secure deletion of digital files from various storage devices
- Safety procedures for handling and managing firearms
Skill in:- Operating standard office equipment including computers
- Solid understanding and/or familiarity with digital devices such as cell phones, tablets, external hard drives, etc.
- Handling weapons and chemicals safely
- Counting large sums of money
- Maintaining and preserving chain of evidence/custody
Education and Experience RequiredEquivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized course work in property/evidence management from an accredited college or university. Two years of experience performing staff work similar to the Legal Office Assistant II classification in Nevada County may be substituted for the supplemental specialized course work from an accredited college or university in property/evidence management.
Licenses and CertificatesPossession of a valid California driver's license within 30 days of hire.
Physical Demands and Working ConditionsThe position requires manual dexterity to handle tools, equipment, and office devices, along with physical mobility to perform tasks such as bending, kneeling, and lifting. It may involve exposure to hazardous materials like chemicals and bodily fluids, and may require working outdoors in difficult weather or terrain. Occasional night, weekend, or after-hours work may be needed. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for qualified individuals with physical limitations.

RetirementThe County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and also provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.
