    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 21 - Supervisory Management

We shelter homeless, abandoned, and lost pets; work to keep and place animals in safe, caring homes; and provide education and services to enhance the lives of people and their animal companions.

    CCAS is seeking to add a Volunteer Coordinator to our dynamic team. This position will play a key role in managing our volunteer division, one of our most vital programs.     What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Planning, directing, and overseeing the Animal Services Department Volunteer Program and coordinating shelter and community support activities for volunteers.
    • Developing volunteer programs or changing existing programs to meet departmental needs.
    • Recruiting, orienting, and training volunteers; overseeing the retention of volunteers.
    • Developing and maintaining orientation materials, training materials, and the volunteer manual.
    • Tracking and reporting volunteer services and hours.
    • Developing reports, presentations, and other work products to communicate the work of the volunteer division to various internal and external audiences.
    • Working collaboratively with other divisions and staff to optimize departmental operations.

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in psychology, sociology, volunteer administration, animal welfare or veterinary administration, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field.

    Experience: One (1) year of full-time or its equivalent experience coordinating and/or supervising a volunteer services program in a public animal control and services setting or one (1) year full-time or its equivalent experience in a management position in a public animal control and services setting.

    Substitution: Additional qualifying experience of any of the types listed below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to maximum of four years. One additional year of qualifying or substitution experience may also be substituted for the required academic major, including:
    • Experience working in a public animal control and services setting
    • Experience working with animals in a humane, zoological, shelter, conservancy, veterinary or other non-laboratory setting
    • Experience training animals in a non-laboratory setting
    • Management experience in a public or private organization

    Desired Qualifications:
    Experience in volunteer database management and software.

    Selection Process

    Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
    Online Interview Assessment: Candidates that possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online Interview Assessment. The assessment is designed to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Animal Services Volunteer Coordinator classification. Candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies assessed, as well as an overall passing score of 70% or higher. (Weighted: 100%)

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

    All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
