    Description

    Assist with the Autopsy and Deputy Coroner functions of the Charleston County Coroner's office as needed. Provide support to Coroner, Chief Deputy Coroner, Manager of Investigation, Autopsy staff, and Deputy Coroners.

    All candidates must consent to a background and credit check to be considered for the position. Before an employment offer, candidates will be required to take a polygraph examination.

    HIRING SALARY: $50,440 (Estimated Annual Salary)

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

    * High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and abilities.

    * Such occupations as medical technician, medical laboratory technician, pathologist’s assistant, hospital technician or mortuary technician are examples of experience which may be considered qualifying.

    * College level education or training which is directly related to the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for required experience on the basis of three semester units for one month of experience or one hour of training for one hour of experience.

    Other Requirements and Essential Physical Demands:

    * Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s license and goo driving record;

    * Must pass a background investigation and polygraph examination to the satisfaction of the Coroner;

    * Must be able to lift 75 pounds;

    * Must be able to lift bodies and various objects, lifting in conjunction with others;

    * Must be able to stand 25% of the time, walk 25%of the time and sit 50% of the time

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. We will not review attachments in lieu of Experience and Education listed on the application.

    Knowledge of:

    * Physiology, anatomy or pathology, and associated medical terminology;

    * Technical procedures and techniques in a hospital unit, medical facility, tissue banks, mortuary, medical laboratory or related type of facility;

    * Knowledge of Coroner’s duties, responsibilities in authorities as prescribed in South Carolina law.

    Skills:

    * Skilled in communicating effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using technical and nontechnical language;

    * Skilled in operating a pc using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned task.

    Abilities:

    * Able to follow detailed oral and written instructions in performing complex medical technical procedures;

    * Able to prepare clear and concise reports and keep accurate records.

    * Able to learn to perform specialized techniques, procedures and tests and operate technical equipment required to assist pathologists in performing autopsies;

    * Able to work in environments involving infectious dead bodies, physical evidence, and biological specimens;

    * Able to work effectively with dead bodies (various levels of decomposition) in an autopsy setting;

    * Able to work in environments where there may be exposure to chemical or biological agents, fumes, blood and other bodily fluids, strong offensive odors, contagious diseases;

    * Able to interact effectively with distraught persons and families of deceased.
